I applied for several remote jobs and received 3 emails on July 8th from two reps, Thomas Swain and the other two from rep Harlen Mork about a remote customer service position from email: [email protected]. There was no contact number but an interview ID, the “hr” rep name Amanda Ellis, a link to review the website and instructions to download the app Signal, to communicate with Amanda. They interviewed via chat then sent me an acceptance letter, W4 form and background check authorization letter via email. They then explained they would send me a check to purchase required equipment to which I would purchase through their private vendor warehouse/website that they would disclose once I received the check and sent photo proof of the deposit. I received a check for $5,500. Notified “Amanda” via the chat thread on the Signal app. I deposited the check on 7/16. On 7/17, my bank placed a return. I called my bank on 7/22 to inquire why and they stated the check was considered fraudulent. I informed Amanda. She offered another check sent via email and to deposit it from another bank if possible as a mobile deposit. My second deleted the check right away explaining missing information. The second check was a different amount and another bank. I questioned this and told them I don’t feel comfortable compromising my long term use with my banks and they will need to find another way and there was no response. After doing some research, there website was not interactive, no contact number and it was actually created on July 8th. The same day they sent me the email. I never spoke with anyone, only through email and chat so there was no way to track. Amanda has failed to respond to me. I have been employed at the same company for over 15 years and had no idea how the remote process worked and was excited to maybe finally be making enough to provide for my two daughters and be home for them so I jumped at the chance hoping this was legit. I went back and reviewed the chat where there was a few times Amanda asked if I could purchase some of the equipment ahead of time since the check will cover me and I refused. I even asked why they couldn’t just purchase themselves and have the materials sent to me. What I believe happened here is they wanted me to try to cash the check, send me to purchase materials/ equipment through their own personal entity, caused a $5,500 withdrawal to them under a false warehouse since she never wanted to disclose the name. My mother then calls me the next day stating she received an email from Amanda Ellis a inquiring about a remote position. My mother is retired and does not know how to apply online. These scammers now have my social security number, license number, phone number, address and I don’t know what else to try to do as they please so I informed my mother since they have my social, they probably are out to try to scam my family members as well.
