Received an email saying they were from my student loan organization and attempted to contact me via phone about a case number

- Mead, WA, USA

I have received automated calls from both of these numbers stating that it is a final attempt to confirm my student loan application. I have made no such applications. I believe that this is related to a scam call that my grandfather received. That call said they were from social security and that he was going to get a 14% increase in his benefits and they wanted to confirm his banking info. He gave that caller my telephone number, but nothing else. I have blocked the numbers listed above.

I received a voice on my phone that said, "Hello this is Linda B***. I'm calling in reference to your federal student loans & need to discuss your repayment options with the new changes that are taking place. It is imperative that you call me before Friday evening at 866-310-0457 with your reference number 44740. Thank you." I had just submitted a recertification application with my Federal Loan Service Provider so I thought the call was legitimate. When I returned the call, I spoke to person who said his name was Alex Si**. He proceeded to tell me that I qualified for a better loan through a program titled REPAYE with the State Department of Education and needed to send me a code to verify my account. He sent the code to my phone and asked me to read it back to him. I did and he used it to access my student loans account. He said he was filling out an application to switch my loans and my student loan payment would go down. Then he told me that the first payment would come out September 26th and he needed my bank account number. I refused to give it to him and hung up. I immediately tried to log in to my student loans account and found I was locked out. I did a password reset and got back into my account so I immediately contacted the company and told them what happened. I also had to contact my loan service provider but have not heard back from them to see if anyone tried to change my loans. When I looked back through my phone, I realized that the call had come from a Boise number (208) 314-5571.
