Paying Back Federal Loans
I recieved a phone call from a number I did not recognize, from San Juan Capistrano, California. Then within seconds recieved a text message from Michelle - saying she was with Student Loan Services and was returning my call. Now, prior to this, this morning I tried to call my loan servicer and it did give me the option to press #1 to have a return call back, so I did, rather than stay on hold for over an hour.
Once I received the text message with the name Michelle, a case number, phone number and extension, I called. I had to go through 2 prompts to her extension and she picked right up.
She begins to tell me who she is and wants to help me select a plan for my loan repayments. I began to ask a question about combining my loan with my husband and she told me that spouse loans do not combine with each other.
So she asked me if I know my FSA ID and Password or my loan servicer log in and I said yes. She then asked me for that info. RED FLAG. I hesitated and asked her, "I am not sure I want to do that, how can I trust that you are legit" again RED FLAG. She told me she could give me a temporary log in, because she need to see my info. RED FLAG. But I gave in. She tells me the info on my screen, of the loan amount and the school I went to but that was it. She asked me how much money do I make, and how many in the family. NO OTHER PERSONAL INFO WAS GIVEN. She then tells me that she is going to submit the SAVE application and put me on a brief hold. Came back and said congratulations you qualify for the SAVE program. Here is what you shoudl expect. For 246 months there are 3 tiers. Tier 1 is for 12 mon and you will pay XX, Tier 2 is for 60 months and you will pay XX and the remaining 174 mo. you will pay ZERO. Like what? OK this is crazy now. You are telling me that more than 90% of the loan will be forgiven? She then tells me that I have from 10/4/23 - 10/18/23 to decide what date I want to use for my due date, they will need a 1040 or w-2, and 2 pay stubs. She will send me an email and I will acknowledge this plan and return it along with my documentation. I asked if my husband could call her and she said yes, she would be willing to help him as well.
After the call, I changed my log in for my FSA ID and well pretty much realized this could have gone really bad.
I have blocked her number, went to my loan servicer and applied for the SAVE plan - it will take upto 4 weeks or longer to review my application, and she did it in 30 seconds. RED FLAG!
WOW! my first scam experience. It will be my last.
