SLSA is legit. SLA is a scam.
The legitimate organization is SLSA. This group is calling themselves SLA. The name is close enough to create some confusion, but they are not legitimate.
Call from Haley today.
received the call today 2/3/2022
My caller was Haley Mendez called from (256) 918 2039 and asked to call bak at 855 567 0095. Don't fall for this
keep getting voicemails about this forgiveness program
SLA Servicing - Scam
Then a different recorded voice came on and said "To opt out of future calls please call 202-908-3064"
I did not call back.
Student loan reduction / Forgiveness SCAM
I received the same voicemail, however from a Haley Mendez (woman) with SLA Servicing. She was calling from this number: 707-203-5042 (nearby area code to my 530 area ) (submitted) but left 855-958-5088 as a callback number.
The message said, "Hi, this is Haley Mendez from SLA Servicing. If you could give me a call back when you receive this message at 855-958-5088 and I'm calling regarding your student loans. We are in the process of pre-enrollment for all loan forgiveness files and possible loan discharge files. It's going to a bit more challenging as deadlines come to complete that process so we don't want anyone's status to changes especially for these programs. So call me when you have a few minutes to review the details. Again my number is 855-958-5088 . Thank you and I hope to hear from you soon."
Then a different recorded voice came on and said "To opt out of future calls please call 202-908-3064"
I then decided to call 855-958-5088 back from a burner GoogleVoice number...
"Our records show you were recently contacted by one of our enrollment specialists, if you owe more than $5000 in Federal Student loans, please press 1 to be connected with one of our representatives.
If you owe less than this amount, or would like to be placed on our do not call list please call 202-908-3064"
The recording played 2x, then a third time with the same script in a different voice, then disconnected.
I immediately called 855-958-5088 again and got a "The number you dialed is not in service, please check the number and try again. Goodbye"
I then dialed 707-203-5042 and got - "You have reached the Student Loan Support department, you might be calling because we reached out to you about new updates on your student loan reduction, or possibly your eligibility for a program that can lead to student loan forgiveness. If this applies to you , and you do have federal student loans that need assistance...
press 1 to be connected to one of our representatives
or if you'd like to be taken off our call list press 2'
I pressed 1, was put on hold about 30 seconds (with terrible hold music), in this time, an announcement "The Biden administration announced the loan cancellation program...blah blah blah...you'll find out more momentarily."
was then transferred 5 or 6 times (ring tone changed each time)...then finally, "no one is available to take your call, please try again later".
Then a different recorded voice came on and said "To opt out of future calls please call 202-908-3064"
I did not call back.
Type of a scam Credit Repair/Debt Relief
He proceeded to explain the student loan forgiveness program and asked if he could collect some info to see if I qualify. I was hesitant but I figured I'd see what this was about. He asked for my name, DOB, address, current student loan balance, and est. yearly income. I gave him my maiden name, old phone #, and different address. He said it'd be 3-4 mins to find out if I qualify, so I waited.
He came back saying I qualified for a program that will repay my student loans (in full) in 120mos, as long as my yearly income doesn't exceed $125k. But, he told me that, before that could happen, I first have to pay a preparation/consolidation fee of $180 over 4mos (totaling $720). He asked if I want to proceed. I told him I'd like more time to gather info and look over all the details before committing, and asked if he could email the docs first. He said he needed card info before emailing the docs (weird) because once a call is ended, they move on to another client and can't have unfinished/unsigned docs floating around. I thought the whole thing was strange, but he said I could give him a debit, credit, prepaid, an old/expired, or even a gift card (also weird). So I gave him a pre-paid card number that's almost expired and never really has money in it.
He emailed the docs but said I had to sign them before ending the call, and then I could use the next 72 hrs to review the docs further, and cancel if I wanted. I told him I wasn't going to sign them until I read them, so he stayed on the phone for about an hr while I read through them. He checked in periodically asking if I had any Qs. I told him section 10 was vague, wordy, unspecific and asked for clarification. He proceeded to tell me it was about confidentiality and not sharing my info (which was absolutely wrong because the section is about Indemnification & Hold Harmless). So the fact that he didn't even know the doc was sketchy to me.
My mom works in a law firm so I sent the docs to her for review. She searched Student Prep Center online to check legitimacy but didn't seem too concerned. But she sent this website, so when I found this page and the numerous scam claims on it, my strange feelings were immediately confirmed.
I told Ayden I was finished reading the docs and that I did not want to move forward as I want to continue reviewing the info and maybe look at other options. I never implied or said anything about feeling uncomfortable, untrusting, or anything of that sort. He then proceeded to tell me I could take the docs to the police station for review so that they could "prove you wrong" (those were his words).
I then asked for a call reference # and he wouldn't give me one. I asked THREE times and he wouldn't give a yes/no answer, just beat around the bush and said it wouldn't matter since all the info would be deleted (even though he told me previously that the call was being recorded). He also said twice, word-for-word, "this is the second time the govt has contacted you to try and help you but you aren't interested." Then at the end of the call he apologized for "wasting" my time and asked if there was anything else he could do for me. I said, "No, but thank you so much for your help," and he instantly got short and weird and said goodbye.
The other fishy thing is that there is no physical address on the docs for Student Prep Center, just a ph#, email address, and website. But the ph# listed is the 877# I listed on this claim, which isn't the # they left in the VM that I called. So I def feel that this is a scam, especially considering how many complaints there are on here about this company, and the odd inconsistencies.
