I responded to a job posting on Indeed.com that said Miller, Helms, & Folk, PA was looking for a remote customer service employee. I was emailed by someone by the name of Hayden Sturgeon at the email [email protected] in regard to the job application. Below are transcripts of our email conversations:

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Act as the first point of contact via email, phone, and live chat, for clients

Perform remote troubleshooting through diagnostic techniques and pertinent questions.

Direct unresolved issues or feedback to the next level of support personnel.

Adeptly utilize internal Customer Relationship Management (CRM) and Ticketing Tool (Manage Engine) systems to manage client support requests.

Cash out and prepare a deposit at the end of shift.

Assist with administrative tasks and other special projects as needed.

Work with the accrediting bodies of several states on behalf of the clients.

Develop a strong knowledge of Vector Solutions web-based products and be able to align these solutions to meet the specific needs of each client.

Create client-facing support articles for our knowledge repository.

Initiate and complete a variety of day-to-day tasks in support of Client Services' efforts to effectively serve clients.

NOTE: As of now, this is not a job position that is based in the office. Instead, this is a Remote Job Position [ WORK FROM HOME ]. The hours can vary as some weeks will be busier than others and you decide the hours so it doesn't affect your current job [ Flexible working hours ]. I then responded confirming the job offer and gave the personal information that was requested. Then I recieved this email:

Congratulations ,

We are hereby informing you that your details have been received, and you have been accepted and employed as Miller, Helms & Folk, PA customer service representative, or CSR. As you know this is a part-time job position at this moment, so if you have any other job, you can still keep your other job.

NOTE: Your job application paperwork will be sent to your address on file within 3 - 7 business days, you will sign and mail a copy of it back, so all application process conversations must be through email and phone text messages for record purposes as it will be printed and attached to your application file.

The manager will conduct a 30-minute zoom interview/introduction after returning from a business trip on June 10th.

Further information will be passed across to you as soon as a list of your first-week tasks is made and sent to you via email. Prior to that, You will be orientated during your first assignment.

The company policy is to empower all workers with adequate and up-to-date tools to enable their day-to-day activities to be easy and prompt, therefore, your first-week payment of eight hundred and seventy dollars { $870 for a start } will be coming along with your first assignments such as purchasing some Gadgets, laptop, mobile phone, printer, and others, The funds will be sent over to you from our financial payroll. The company already has a supplier for these items, and the individual is shipping them once payment is confirmed. I will share the information about the supplier with you once you receive the payment.

I once again confirmed the opportunity and gave the information requested. I asked the name of the Supplier and was ignored. I then received this email:

Good morning ,

I apologize for the late response, which is as a result of my extremely busy schedule. I am pleased to inform you that the funds for your first assignment and your weekly payment has been sent to your given address and it is scheduled to deliver to you within 1-3 business days via United States Postal Service (USPS) on this tracking number { 9405511206214666558646 }, with which you can check the status at usps.com, proceed with your first assignment after you deposit the payment with your bank which will be available immediately or within 24 hours depending on your bank policy.

However, I have contacted our associate gadget supplier and I have given them the list of equipment you need to get for the company {Mobile phone, Printer, Microsoft Surface Laptop 4 and others}. I have reached an accord with them that you will send them the funds and they will ship all those equipment to you so that you can have enough tools to start training/work fully as soon as possible. I have informed them about you as a newly employed customer service representative, or CSR at Miller, Helms & Folk, PA. So now you will have to deduct your weekly salary of $870 from the total amount you have on the check payment which is Three thousand nine hundred eighty dollars and zero cents ($3,980). Also, deduct $96 for transport expenses. so the total amount you are to deduct is nine hundred sixty-six dollars ($966). The remaining of the fund is to purchase EQUIPMENT.

I have a very busy schedule throughout this week, Please ensure you thoroughly read and understand your first assignment instructions, I will reply to your email whenever I'm less busy.

I responded with more questions about the job and the supplies I was supposed to purchase. I received this email in response:

Hi , it is my pleasure to inform you that The check was delivered to you , Please confirmed the receipt of the check and take it down to your bank to have it deposit or make a mobile deposit of the check to avoid stress and kindly get back to me with the deposit slip once you have it to know when your Bank says the check will goes through…Pls certify if you received my message thank you

At this point I stopped contacting the company. I did receive a cash order check for over $3,000 in the mail addressed to me from a Thomas Burgess. I did not deposit the check, because I had a feeling it wasn't legit. I called Miller, Helms & Folk PA, who confirmed that this opportunity was in fact a scam.
