Instagram was advertising Studio Ghibli Advent Calendars. The site seemed legit enough and offered two different options for purchase, a standard and a deluxe set. The deluxe was advertised to come with all licensed Ghibli characters made of higher quality materials along with keychains and a few Christmas ornaments. I bought the deluxe version. Two and a half months later, what arrived was a broken tackle box wrapped in a ripped cellophane with janky versions of Totoro. Inside I found a bunch of Kinder joy toys being regifted to me. Some were literally still in plastic Milka wrappers. None of the advertised Ghibli characters were there. Mostly off brand avengers and Kakao characters… and none higher quality than a happy meal toy.
