Type of a scam Debt Collections

I received a call from Debra Love concerning a debt that my husband owes for over $900 due to magazine subscriptions. He does not remember ever ordering magazines and not paying for them. She stated that it was sent to collections, through two different agency's. My husband and I have been sent to collections in the past...we know how it works. We have never once received letters or phone calls pertaining to this "magazine" debt until today. She stated that as the mediator, she cannot provide me with any details surrounding the magazine names that were ordered or dates as to when this occurred. She also stated that she is unsure when this was sent to collections, but that she can see in her transaction log that it was sent. The scary part is that they have my husband's last 4 of his SS#. I know that it isn't that difficult to find these types of things with the internet anymore, but it made it that much more believable. She then stated that we had to pay today, the amount of $989, or that she would tell her client to pursue action against us which could cost upwards of $4,000.
