The giveaway when its by email is the sender's email address. The email may show a very legitimate looking image but the email address is obviously is not from the company is is purported to be from, it is like nothing I've seen before and sometimes not even from Canada,c ertainly not from the company shown.
There are two giveaways with the phone calls, one is that there is never anyone on the line when I answer, obvously trying to line up the suckers. The second is that they never give or ask my name. Any legitimate caller answers the phone immediately and always asks if they are are speaking to me by name.
You might warn people to watch for these.
