Modern Dog / Modern Cat magazine runs a supposed contest, called 'America's Favorite Pet'. The site pretends to be a free service. Nearly immediately after signing up our dog, my wife was receiving emails, that claimed for a payment, they could 'promote' our pet for additional fee. The fact that we were quickly attempted to 'pay to play' should have been a warning. The grand prize for the contest is supposedly $10,000 and to be on a cover of the magazine 'Modern Dog'. My mother, was using facebook to put in votes for our dog. She barely uses the internet, and coincidentally had her account compromised within days of her using the website to 'vote' for our dog. After finding this out, I did more research on the contest. Googling the contest and the word 'scam' or 'fraud' brings up a dozens of articles, accusations, and other people warning about this as a scam or fraud. I went to the website for 'Modern Dog'. I immediately had hesitation, as the site looks extremely similar to the 'fake news' websites on the internet. Slew of AI written articles, and no direct advertisement for a supposed magazine that they sell. I found it very strange that a website, for a magazine publication, would not have any advertisements, or direct links, to get the magazine. When scrolling through the website to find how to get this magazine, I came across the 1-800 # for them. Listed as 1-800-417-6289. I called the 1-800 number, anticipating a business to answer. After all, this is supposed to be a major magazine publication hosting a $10,000 award, with distribution of the magazine across the United States and Canada. When you call that number, which I attempted 4 times, to be ABSOLUTELY sure, it rings to a cell phone voicemail box, with a woman's name, that the audio is too garbled to make out the name. I run a small local business in the United States, and when you call our 1-800 #, you get an appropriate answer, and it is very clear this is a business. Lastly, if you scroll all the way to bottom of the moderndog.com or moderncat.com websites, at the VERY bottom of the page, it says 'Funded by the Government of Canada', with some official looking Canada logo. I find it extremely strange, the Government of Canada would fund a for-profit magazine? Does the Government of Canada take a special interest in dog magazine with AI written generic articles and a dog photo contest? The Government of Canada, funded a pet magazine, that has a 1-800 phone number, but doesn't have an appropriate answering system that indicates it's actually a business? If you research this organization online like I mentioned above, there are dozens of accusations that this is a fraudulent / scam, so I am far from the 1st person to think that this company is not a legit business. There are several accusations on Reddit pages of people who claim their bank accounts were hit from this Scam. Fortunately, I am not in that situation, currently. But I want my country to investigate this issue, and protect innocent pet owners from predatory scam artists.
