I received a robocall from Tampa Electric (TECO) on Friday, 4/23/2021, 4:45pm , 813-223-0800 (# is saved on my phone) indicating my utilities would be shut off in the next few minutes. If I wanted to speak to a representative to press "4" option. I had no reason to doubt call as it came from TECO. I was immediately transferred to a Spanish rep, Veronica Rivera. She indicated my payments were being rejected for last few months due to banking drafts were taking too long to credit TECO account causing it to be delinquent. Therefore, money was being returned and I was to make other arrangements to pay a balance of $992.10 however, if $496.05 was paid she would be able to stop the disconnection order with TECO workers. She further instructed me to get a MoneyPak because payments any other way was not authorized to be used to avoid disconnect due to disconnect order. I tried to contact TECO through a landline (unknowingly to caller) and was not able to get through. Online account showed no current balance overdue and there were no notifications from TECO. Veronica reassured me there were several contacts were made through the bill for last few months. Online and TECO phone lines were acting up after a while, however, if call was dropped same rep would continue to call from TECO phone number. Veronica would insist on the MoneyPak and if she had me on the line she could "hold off the disconnection." Not knowing what else to do and not being able to get through to TECO, being after business hours I opted to head off to get the MoneyPak. Veronica stayed on the line the entire drive to and from many stores trying to locate the MoneyPak. I asked to speak to a Supervisor/Manager and Veronica managed to change conversation and ease fears that I would be getting the refund check by the end of the day though mail even though they had already delivered mail for the day. Veronica reassured me the $992.10 was being refunded by check and mail would need to come back to deliver check the same day and difference was due in the next 10-15 business days. I obtained the MoneyPak for $500. I located MoneyPak in a Winn Dixie store after trying two Circle K stores and a 7-11 store. Once MoneyPak was obtained she immediately asked for the numeration on the back of card. Once numeration was provided she asked me to remain on HOLD until it was verified "disconnect team was notified." After being on HOLD for some time Veronica provided confirmation # XR556912. Veronica indicated I can go to the main office on 1898 Nuccio Pkwy Tampa FL 33605 to make payment in person, I checked Google maps and office was a legitimate TECO office. At 7pm Veronica stated she would be giving me her personal number 347-855-3915 to ensure the disconnection would be ceased. I called the phone number and a “man” answered” and then I received a call back from the same number. I questioned the time periods “owed” and per Veronica it was for services dated 12/15/2020 to 4/30/2021.Once I was able to regain some access back online I noticed I had paid much more than the $992.10. I then informed her mail person was not back yet and demanded tracking number of check since she was able to look “location of my check.” As I requested more information she stated she would place me on HOLD to verify the “stop order for disconnect was relayed to the team” and look into the account information further. Call was dropped at about 9:08 pm and I tried calling back and call went to Voicemail.
