Type of a scam Debt Collections
If I hadn't been in such a hurry to settle what I thought was my debt I would have had time to research all this before paying up. Luckily, on the advice of my State Attorney General's office, I was able to get the charges reversed. I realized about halfway through the transaction that this was a scam but was threatened with breach of contract charges if I backed out. The lawyer at the State Attorney General's office said those scare tactics are common and to go to the bank anyway to file the reverse of charges. He also advised me to discontinue any contact with this company and to file a fraud alert with Equifax.
The lady at the bank told me that usually what happens is that these scammers search public records to see who is actively paying off old debt and then they somehow get their hands on a credit report or just find collection accounts for individual by searching old records. They look for people who are obviously trying to repair their credit and then prey on them in hopes that they will scare them enough to make them pay up to avoid something new appearing on their credit report (like a judgment). They insist it be taken care of the same day as the call or they threaten to sue and this scares people into paying. They debt the tried to "sue" me for was actually too old to collect on but they gave me different dates to make me think it was still valid. They also gave me four different amounts that I owed for this account (this was after I called back to try to validate the debt). The "staff" are extremely rude and if they were a real collection agency they would have violated several of the CFPB rules.
Hopefully by sharing my experience I can help prevent someone else from becoming a victim of these scammers.
Please remove my postal code from being published. I live in an extremely small rural area and would not like the scammers to be able to identify me. Thank you.
