Alert/alarm and message appeared on the screen of my wife's laptop. She said it looked legit like a Microsoft support message. It told her she had a virus and that she shouldn't shut down as she might loose her info and that her only option was to call this number 8665813413. Unfortunately, when she called, my wife was instructed to launch a command prompt window and type in some commands she does not remember. The person then began to ask about other devices in the house, our landline and other details unrelated to a virus on a laptop. At that point, I asked the person to verify who she was and the company she worked for as I had know way to know if she was legit or gathering info for theft, identity theft or fraud. She insisted that because my wife called her based on a pop up on the screen that she was legit. At that point I told her that as an IT professional she should know that calling an unverified number based on a pop up message/alarm is a mistake and if she was unwilling to admit that basic scam prevention technique, she was not who she said she was. She stopped responding at that point and the call was ended.
