Type of a scam Tech Support
Called and they offered to "fix" it for me. I said was using laptop given to me to use by our school so I would get that guy to fix it. They said oh no we can fix it now and if I touched computer at all it would crash. He said he found a "koobface" virus which was a variation of facebook. He had me read the definition to him aloud after he googled it for me which I thought odd but it seemed legitimate at the time. Then he said he could remove the virus but I would have to pay for the service. The lowest cost service was for six months I think but he insisted I buy the year of computer protection for $99.99.
Gave him a credit card number; at least I knew enough not to give him my debit card number attached to my bank account. He said it would take about two hours. About halfway through I started to think what have I done, he's in my computer! So I disregarded the strong warnings about leaving the screen that was up and googled Tech Trick Solutions and it was a scam! I immediately took computer offline and shut it down and called my credit card company and got a new account and card.
I told them I would not pay that charge and that it was a scam. That was March 16th and just yesterday received a letter from the credit card company (after several phone calls that assured me it was taken care of, but it wasn't) (last week I got a letter saying it was going to go to collections - plus fees which had grown by now to about $150) that they had removed all charges after investigating it.
I hadn't even activated the new account credit card yet, the scam charges got moved to the new card. So anyway it is finally resolved. I changed my bank account passwords and removed the files from my computer they had put on my laptop to recycling bin; kept there in case they would be evidence in some illegal use of my personal or financial information they could have found while they "fixed" my computer.
I found the name Tech "Trick" Solutions ironic as they indeed tricked me. I felt so stupid to fall for it. He even called and left two voice mails of why I had not let him finish his work. Was a man with an Indian accent. I have name and phone number somewhere if anyone would like to know them, if I can find the slip of paper. Just found out my aunt (same town) had a similar thing happen this spring also. Want people to be informed about it.
