Total money lost $500
Type of a scam Tech Support
She was told that they were affiliated with Microsoft. She was also told that her computer had been infected and that she had some open ports that were letting people hijack her computer. They offered to fix everything for her for a 3 year service commitment costing $500. They needed to remote into her computer.
I called her to chat at the time they were working in her computer. She told me the story and alarm bells went off. I hung up and then researched the company and found a fairly basic website. I then googled the address they had listed and found four other tech companies listed under the same address. Each of these companies had an almost identical basic website (template). Each of these companies had been reported as scams in various scam reporting sites, including PCFix247 at the ScamPulse.com site. The scam that was described was exactly what happened to my mother.
Before I could reach my mother again, the credit card charge had gone through. I had her immediately pull the internet connection on her computer. We found that the so-called fix was to delete everything on her computer and then install free shareware antivirus.
We had to reset the router and computer to factory settings fearing they may have put malware on the computer. She is contacting the credit card company to contest the charge. We have to reinstall everything. Fortunately, she had backups of photos.
This company has her credit card information, so we had to cancel her card. We have spent hours resetting and reinstalling her computer.
