Type of a scam Employment
The interview was conducted via Skype IM (Instant Messaging). The Skype contact was "Mr. Kevin ****". After many questions, most seemingly work-related, I was given more information and requirements about the position. I would need a computer, a printer, and multiple software applications. When I asked who was responsible for purchasing said items, they said the company would send me a check to use to purchase the required items from an approved vendor. I was told that I was hired and to check in with Mr. Kevin **** through Skype IM by 8 am the next morning.
I did check in with Mr. Kevin **** and learned that my job offer email and tax paperwork to begin working would be in an email. I did receive the email and the address on the email was the correct address for TechnologyOne out of Australia. The W-4 and I-9 forms looked official and everything. They also wanted a photocopy of my ID (front & back).
I researched the company and on the official website it said: "BEWARE OF RECRUITER FRAUD". I called the Better Business Bureau and my fears were confirmed that it was a scam. No business is going to send someone they don't know a check for new equipment. If the company wants an employee to have new equipment, they will send the employee the equipment that they are to use.
I didn't fill out the W-4 or the I-9 form or submit a copy of my License. I did, however, provide them with my name, address, email, and phone number.
Two days later, I received a check for $3,829.00. I did NOT cash it. I DID take it to my local post office to report it.
I am glad that I wasn't scammed and will be more cautious with employment opportunities from now on.
Best advice, "If it seems too good to be true, it usually is."
I had the same hunch so, I started to ask more questions still playing along, and they dismissed them and got a bit defensive, which is not professional conduct at all.
