A company by the name of Opodo solicited to purchase my vacation club membership. They advised that once we agreed on a price they would secure a US law firm to coordinate the completion of the sale. I was contacted by Terri James Law Office from CA to complete the sale process. Someone posing as an attorney from this firm contacted me and explained the process and indicated he would be contacting my resort to see if they would agree to the sale and transfer of ownership. He further stated that they would subsequently call me to get my authorization. I eventually received a call from someone posing as my resort asking if I was in agreement to sale my membership. I was told I needed to pay off my balance of $3430.26 first. They emailed me documents to complete the payoff by wire transfer. I subsequently made the wire transfer payoff and was then told there was a capital gains tax of $7871.92 due in Mexico. The law firm conducted a 3-way call with me and the posing Mexican tax authority. They further provided confirmation to me that these funds were being held by them in escrow to be reimbursed to me at the completion of the sale.

When I was due to receive the contracted funds, I was contacted by someone claiming to be from Scotia Bank in Mexico stating they tried to wire the funds to my bank but it was returned due to them not having sufficient information. They were requesting 4.6% of the proceeds of ($49,303.10) to be wired to them in advance before attempting to resend. I was persuaded by the law firm to ignore the prior red flags but when they didn't find this alarming, I concluded they must be known participates in this scam. I accused them of facilitating the scam but they have denied it. They claim they are still attempting to close the sale with the buyer.
