Type of a scam Online Purchase
On June 1st, I went to their Facebook page "The Elephant Pants", which has over 200k "likes", clicked their website, and was taken to a site where I spent $119.95 over two orders to purchase what I thought was the pants from a company a trusted and liked.
The charges were taken from my PayPal account, and I received a confirmation email with order numbers. They requested I allow 3 weeks for shipping due to COVID19.
On June 25th, I had heard NOTHING from the company, no shipping information, etc. I emailed the contact email on their website, which is the first time I noticed that the site address ended with a "z". Even though I clicked the hyperlink on facebook on the legitimate Facebook page, it directed me to a different site without me knowing. On Facebook, the link reads http://www.theelephantpants.com. But when it was clicked, it immediately comes up with the URL http://www.theelephantpantz.com
I assumed I misread the link, and sent an email requesting shipping information. I heard nothing. I sent another email on June 29th, and got no response. On July 6, I checked the verified instagram account I have been following for years. The hyperlink reads The Elephant Pants, but the website it directs you to is The Elephant Pantz.
I searched the different name with a Z on Facebook and an identical page to the original one came up. The logo, about section, and banner message "from the founder" were the exact same as the original The Elephant Pants page. I sent a message to the page and received an immediate response, stating that the 6 week delay was due to manufacturing mix ups and a faulty batch of pants. It didn't make sense, and I never received notice of the delay. The fake page, moderated by somebody who goes by "Emily", responded and said I should receive my shipping information "soon".
I was very suspicious so I began searching through Google. All of the social media marketing for The Elephant Pants (original company) stopped in December 2018. Upon further investigation, I found an update from Shark Tank (where the original company got a big start), stating that as of February 2019, the company website was dark.
The PayPal charges showed up on my PayPal to "Preeans store". However, I found the first purchase I made from the original company in December 2017 and the charge was made to "The Elephant Pants", the legitimate company.
I just want my money back and for no more unlucky people to fall victim to this scam.
