After applying for an arts administrative assistant position, I was contacted via email about a personal assistant job for an independent art curator. After filling out the questionnaire required by the employer, I was chosen for the position and was told I would be receiving a check in the mail to take care of the equipment needed for the position, logistics, and a sign on bonus. After receiving the check, I was told to deposit the check into my account and update her on the availability of the funds. After the funds would be available, I was told to take out the amount needed to cover the equipment that was invoiced prior (over $2,000) and deposit the money directly into the reps account to speed up the process rather than waiting for another check to clear so I could get started right away. I was notified by my bank that the availability of the funds was delayed, and eventually was returned stating the check was altered/fictitious.
