I had been looking for and researching a possible personal loan to consolidate credit card debt. I certainly received quite few responses but unfortunately the one I chose to respond to presented themselves as "Frank Hamilton" at The Lending Club. He said I had been approved based on my online application and after reviewing The Lending Club, it seemed like a legitimate business. I had seen to watch out for some scams with various lenders but mainly to not give any money in advance. He did not request that and instead said that he needed to deposit money into my bank account for verification purposes and then was a bit confusing, but then that money would go back to the "company".. Admittedly this should have raised a bigger red flag, and of course the first couple attempts of around $900, he stated there was some issue on their end and to keep submitting. It never really occurred to me that they could be using what my bank referred to as "whitewash" checks to make the deposits. By the time I realized it and spoke to my bank it was too late, and we both suspected that they would bounce and I would be on the hook for money I never even had. I also requested documentation/confirmation of the loan terms which I was sent and again, should have probably scrutinized it more but now I know the document was all falsified. I know it is very unlikely to be able to resolve this and or find the person responsible even with the information they provided but I am hoping there is anything I can do to at least minimize the damage. I am typically pretty cognizant about scams and frauds, but this one was pretty believable and everyone should beware.
