We were selling a vehicle online and had been getting a good many legit responses so the first email from this person seemed fine & when they started asking us more detailed info about the vehicle they reinforced the perception that they were actually interested. However to their more detailed question I responded that they would need to speak to a different person b/c I personally didn't know too much about the vehicle we received an email asking us to go to a fake website and buy a vehicle history report. They claimed to have used the site when they sold a vehicle and it was a major help to be able to show interested parties and that it was half the cost of the well known vehicle history reporting site. The vast majority of my work is online so I usually pick up on scams pretty quickly and did a fast search for the website - which doesn't exist and found an article from the ScamPulse.com recently published outlining exactly what had just happened. I don't know if the scammer was after the $20 that the report was supposed to cost, my payment info or both but I replied to them with a link to the ScamPulse.com article and a note that I was forwarding the email to the relevant state scam monitoring agencies.

I am selling a vehicle through Craigslist. So far I have received a text and an email. Both are requesting a vehicle report from an unfamiliar website, just as described in your list of possible scams. I did not click on the website provided in the email (which went directly to my spam box - it was a reply to my initial reply to the person who expressed interest in the vehicle).

If this is an attempted scam, my hope is that the information I have provided can lead to the prosecution of the perpetrator.
