I was contacted through Upwork.com by a man named Sean Abbott claiming he was a recuriting manager from Torchmark. It is a legit company however he wasn't what he claimed to be. He requested we speak through google hangouts through an email called [email protected]. Everything seemed normal at first, he asked me some interview questions that took about 30 minutes or so. Afterwards, he said congrats the board of directors approved of you…I do not see how a board of directors could get in contact with him so quickly. Also, if I did not respond within 3 minutes, he would ask me if I am still here. He gave me the details of the position like hourly rate and benefits. He then told me that my home office would need to be set up right away. He informed me that he would send a check for me to order supplies so he needed my address. I gave him my address (probably a wrong choice) and I received a check in the mail via Fedex for $2000. I was very doubtful that it was real so I called the bank that it was from. Federal Credit Union. When I called and gave the check information, the representative immediately that the check was fraud and to get rid of it. He contacted me the same day I got the check and harassed me to deposit it right away. Anytime I questioned something, he would ask if I had a problem with the way things work. I told him after I got off the phone with the bank that the check is fraud so I am not depositing it and I will stop communicating right now.
