Details of Complaint:
1. Sales Tax Issue:
I attempted to purchase a vehicle from this dealership while residing in another state. Despite explaining my residency, they added my state’s sales tax to the purchase order (PO) they prepared for me. This would have resulted in me being charged sales tax twice—once by the dealership and then again by my local DMV when registering the vehicle in my home state. This is not only unethical but demonstrates a lack of proper business practices regarding out-of-state sales.
2. Unnecessary and Dubious Fees:
On the original purchase order, the dealership included several unnecessary fees:
• $500 for “Key Care”
• $199 for “Consumer Services” (with no explanation provided)
• $40 for gas, despite the fact that I never test-drove the vehicle.
When I called to challenge these charges, they sent me an updated PO that removed “Key Care” and “Consumer Services.” This indicates they were knowingly attempting to overcharge me with unjustified fees, and only removed them when confronted.
3. Refusal to Accept a Pre-Approved Loan:
I was pre-approved for a loan through a bank that has this specific dealership listed on its approved dealer list. Despite this, the dealership refused to honor the loan, claiming they would only accept cash for the purchase. My bank verified that this dealership was indeed part of their approved network, which leads me to believe this refusal was a deliberate attempt to push their own financing options and further exploit me.
Conclusion:
These actions clearly demonstrate deceptive and unethical business practices. The dealership knowingly attempted to overcharge me with unnecessary fees, mismanaged the sales tax process to my financial detriment, and refused to accept a legitimate pre-approved loan in an apparent attempt to force me into less favorable terms.
Desired Resolution:
I am requesting a formal investigation into this dealership’s business practices and, at a minimum, acknowledgment of their deceptive behavior. Transparency, accountability, and restitution for impacted customers are necessary to prevent further harm to consumers.
