Type of a scam Travel/Vacation/Timeshare
-I needed to cancel two long-haul flights from Mexico City to Argentina, one flight was going to fly out Oct 13, and the second Oct 19 (both passengers to return together on Oct 28).
-I googled Aeromexico's number to cancel a flight.
-The scammer's phone number was the first result (I didn't know this yet)
-They claimed they were working on behalf of Aeroemexico to handle my flight cancellation, but there was a cancellation penalty per leg of of the round trip flight (2 passengers, so 4 penalties).
-The 'agent' said I'd get a 6,080USD flight credit, but needs to immediately charge 1,400USD to pay the cancellation penalty.
-Their confirmation documentation claimed that Aeromexico would shortly send a confirmation immediately after for the cancellation and credit.
Oct 8:
-I am still receiving emails indicating that Aeromexico is expecting me to fly soon to Buenos Aires.
-I called this company, Air Fare Charge on their 1800 number to confirm cancellation.
-They claimed they had tried to get me credit every 10 days and even tried to call me previously (Oct 7) – I had received no such calls.
-Additionally they said my ticket type did not allow cancellations, even though they asked for $1400 upfront in cancellation fees
-Then they said that the best resolution at this point is to reschedule my flight, with additional penalties and costs attached to it
-We tried to reschedule the flight to late Sep 2025, next year. The 'agent' said they'll need another 24 hours to confirm if the dates were available
-At this point, I was very suspicious of this behaviour since this isn't how airlines usually resolves issues like this. I looked more closely at the PDF of the agreement they had sent me on Sep 6 – it says in fine print "There will be NO REFUND in case of NO SHOW."
-I called the number again, telling them to just schedule as far out as possible – they said late August 2025. But again, will need another 24 hours to confirm the change fees.
-I hung up, frustrated and suspicious, and decided to try to contact Aeromexico from their app
-On this call, Aeromexico said they do not ever work with third party services, and that call was the first time they ever heard of my desire to cancel/reschedule the flight.
-Again, the Aeromexico agent said my ticket type doesn't allow for cancellations, but I had the following 4 days (up until 3 hours of the flight on Oct 13) to reschedule
-The Aeromexico agent said flights cannot be rescheduled further than June 2025 (even though the scam agent said Aug or Sep was possible), and the new flight must be of equal or higher price
-I preemptively changed my flights on the Aeromexico app, on my own
I believe the scammers cast a wide net (via Google SEO) to impersonate airlines and take incoming calls for flight changes, take no action on them, and let the flight times pass so that airlines mark the victim passengers as NO SHOW (ie no refunds, no rescheduling). They are clearly trying to push me past the point where I can no longer do anything because they keep asking for extra 24 hours to 'confirm things on their backend team'. These scammers will likely charge the penalty fees I unknowingly agreed to, only past the point of no rescheduling/refunds. They have not taken my money yet and I don't think they will be able to now, since I've personally rescheduled my flights.
