Tri-State Foods (Claiming to be) Reports & Reviews (1)

- Ridgeway, MO, USA

At approximately 4PM on April 7, 2016, I had just gotten home and was getting a carseat out of the backseat of the car. A white truck with a freezer in the back and no logo pulled in my driveway and parked behind me. I did not get the make and model of the truck or a license plate number. There were two men inside the truck. The passenger got out. He was very friendly and polite and came off like he was someone who knew me. He then asked if my husband was home, and I accidently told him, "No." He then stated that he was in the area on a delivery selling steaks, and he had a large order that a customer had backed out of at the last minute. He stated that rather than having to take all of the meat back and paying a fee, his boss told him to "bless a family" and would throw in free pork, chicken, and seafood. I told him that I was not interested. We have our own meat and did not need any. He then asked if we could go some place out of the wind where it was quiet and he would show me what all he had. I once again stated, "No, I'm not interested today." He said thanks but left me with no brochure or anything telling me about the company. He then walked back to the truck and got in. I walked to the house with the diaper bag and carseat. As I was unlocking the door, the truck was backing out and I assumed they were leaving. I went inside. A few minutes later, my front door opened. It was the driver of the vehicle with boxes of meat in his hands and the passenger with two more boxes. The passenger sat the boxes down and left and did not return. I was surprised and asked him what he was doing, as I had told him I wasn't interested in the driveway. This man apologized and stated he didn't get that impression from his partner. He said he wanted to show me his product and how great of a deal it was before I turned him down. He took all of the beef out of the box, followed by chicken, pork, and seafood. Everything except the seafood, which looked freezer burnt, was vacuum packed. He was trying to sell me all 4 boxes full price, which ended up being between $1700-1800 and stated he would throw in 6 more boxes for free. He said he would be back later in the summer with prime rib and cheesecake. He kept saying how great of a deal this is and how it would be stupid to pass up. He would not stop talking about how he was "blessing a family" or give me a chance to speak. It sounded very expensive and sketchy to me, and I was not interested in buying any meat. He then began asking questions like, "How many freezers do you have?" "Where are they at?" "Can I see them?" "What do you use to buy groceries with? Cash? Credit or debit card? Checks?" "It is easier for me if you write a check." "Please don't tell you neighbors about us or these prices because we can't do the same for them." He picked up the boxes and started asking me which freezer I wanted him to put them in. I once again told him that I wasn't interested in buying today. He started acting like he was mad, and stated, "I thought you were going to buy these. You acted like you wanted them. Why did you let me talk and waste an hour if you didn't want these?" He was trying to make me feel bad, and I reminded him that I didn't invite him in here. I asked him for a brochure and stated I would talk it over with my husband. He gave me a laminated brochure that said "Iowa Steak Company." He stated he was with Tri-State Foods, but that was written nowhere on this brochure. I told him I would check out the website that was written on the brochure if we decided to order, which was iasteak.com. He then stated that was an old website and the new website was "tristatefoods.com," and they were salesman from the Kansas City division. I once again told him I was not buying any at this time and to please leave. I even told him I couldn't afford what he was selling. He said he had cheaper deals. He then tried selling me three boxes, then one box whenever I kept declining his offers. He was not taking no for an answer, and said, "No. I know you can afford this." I began feeling very uncomfortable. I felt that he knew it was just my seven month old and I there, and he was taking advantage of it. I remember there were two men, I had not seen this other man for almost an hour and had no idea what he had been doing this entire time. I don't know if he was casing our property or if they were just there with intentions to sell. I didn't feel like he was going to physically harm me or my baby, but I wanted these two men to leave before things escalated. I ended up writing a check for the cheapest thing he had, which was $208. He told me that those were the same meats that restaurants, such as Olive Garden, Outback, and Applebee's buy, and to make sure that I cook them from frozen because they will taste better. He had me make the check out to "Tri-State Foods." He then stated, "I have worked for this company for 15 years, I'm not going anywhere. I will be back in this area later." He left his name as Jason Dietz. He left a phone number with a 502 Kentucky area code to call because of the "3 year freezer burn warranty" on the meat. They left my house at this time. They left around 5PM. I looked up these two websites, and they both looked legit. The next morning, I called the 1-800 number listed on Tri-State's website to complain about the salesman to customer service. It was a non-working number. I looked at the website a little closer and realized it was for Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan. The salesman had said there service area was Kansas, Missouri, and Iowa. I don't believe they are with an actual business. I then checked my bank account, which showed the check had not been cashed. I put a stop on the check and closed that account since it had been compromised. I filed a report with Harrison County Sherriff's Department.
