Early in the morning at 9:22 am on Friday, November 27 of 2020, I received a call. It was a male voice with a thick accent he told me that he was calling on behalf of my electric company to let me know that my bill was past due and had an order to be disconnected in the next 45 minutes.
Since the beginning of the call, he established a sense of urgency, so he was talking really fast and didn't allow too much time for one to think about what was going on. the dialog was more or less like this.
scammer: "Hello sir, I am calling from your electric company, this is a courtesy call to let you know that your electric bill is past due and there is an order to disconnect your service in the next 45 minutes. Would you like to stope that?"
Me: "Of course I want to stop that I don't want my service to be interrupted!"
scammer: "Ok sir, listen to me well! I need you to please take a piece of paper and write down the number I am going to give you, to call your electric company and tell them that I have spoken to you and you want to go ahead and take care of the payment in order to avoid disconnection"
Me: "I am ready!" –So I called the number and a female voice answered this time.
scammer: "Thank you for calling your electric company, how may I help you!"
Me: "Where am I calling?"
scammer: "This is your electric company sir"
Me: "Yeah but. What is the name of my company?"
scammer: –Makes a 2 seconds pause and "This is the AEP sir"
Me: "Oh really! And what's the name of the company that takes care of my billing?"
scammer: –Pauses for about 5 seconds "hmmm....please give a moment sir"
Me: Hang up right away and called my real electric company TXU!
TXU: –After Identifying my account and myself they advised me to contact my local authorities and make a report for they have been registering other cases like this where unfortunately people have fallen for the scam and paid their hard-earned money to scammers. So I did!
These people knew the status of my account somehow, which in fact was past due, and they also got a hold of my personal number which is kind of scary but I am reporting this so they hopefully go out of business soon and get caught by the authorities.
Be careful everyone and be safe!

Received an automated message at my business stating they were going to cut my electricity off in 30 minutes for non-payment unless I contacted them at the above number. We do not have TXU as an energy provider.
