I was sent a moving estimate via e-mail by someone named "Matt" posing as a sales representative for U-Haul moving and storage of Garfield, NJ. The estimate was wonderful, he was giving me discounts left and right - a free flight of stairs on my fourth floor walk-up! He said this would be a quick and easy job, and wouldn't require more than 4 hours total and 2 guys. I said great, and went ahead and booked his services. No money up front, or signed contracts. He sent a COI to me and everything. The day of the move the movers show up in an unmarked van, which was strange but I figured maybe this was just how they performed the job. We agreed upon 2 men helping with the move, 3 men show up. They start the work and everything is great, my partner and I get the guys Gatorade's and thank them profusely for their help. All is great, we head to our new address. The guys took about an hour and twenty minutes to get to our new destination when it should've taken no more than 45 minutes. But I figured they maybe stopped and grabbed lunch or took a well deserved break. They show up and before they start bringing things out of the truck, the foreman hands me my bill and goes you must cash app us this before we move anything. I said ok yeah no problem. I look at the bill and it is $570 MORE than we discussed. We agreed upon $425 all in. This new invoice was for $995. When I called "Matt" he berated me and acted like I had no concept of how moving works, how walk-ups work, and how time works. When I said this is more than double the originally agreed upon rate he said it was just an estimate and this move was far more extensive then he thought. Not sure how that's even true because I went into great detail on how I lived in a fourth floor walk up, and this was stated on my invoice and required more men even though the extra man there was "free labor". He said talk to the foreman on the job, the foreman then said talk to management since they booked it. They were giving me the run around. I was freaking out, I was told unless we paid we would not get our stuff. In the contract it said they agree to be paid by venmo, zelle, credit card, cash etc. It did not say anything about cash app being the only way to accept payment. I was a mess and just wanted my items and them out of my space. I reluctantly paid and the 3 men started to work again. I have never felt more helpless or taken advantage of in my life. The men didn't assemble my bed correctly so I had to redo the entire thing once they left.

Upon being so weirded out by everything experienced, I called U-Haul two days later to see if I could speak to someone about this entire process. I spent 50+ minutes on the phone with them. My contract did not exist in U-haul even though they gave me a job number and listed uhaul.com as the provider. Matt and his sketchy business are pretending to be a U-Haul moving company. U-Haul called them and they said "management" would be in touch with them and that someone from their team would also be reaching out to me. This was all a front. U-Haul is opening an investigation and suggested I call the police and let them know about the extortion and falsely identifying as their business.

I am so upset. DO NOT USE this fake business, they are going to give you a too good price then charge you 2x + that. I am going to great lengths to make sure everyone is aware of this. The actual movers were great, but this shady practice was something they planned to do the entire time.
