Linkedin had a job opportunity as a mystery shopper. I had done that kind of work before so I applied. I got a text message a few weeks later saying that I was accepted and would be contacted within five days.

I didn't think anything of it.

I came home one night to find an envelope return addressed to a completely different company based out of Richmond Virginia and having nothing to do with marketing.

I got a sparse letter explaining my assignment and another assessment form and a "check" for $2,950.00.

I was instructed to text a number once the moneys were available and I had purchased several gift cards from an apple store.

Then it was signed Peter Verrill Ph.D survey evaluation coordinator. (he even has a linkedin page...) but not related to a company of even remotely the same as what is on the letter I received, or the linkedin job opportunity.

The biggest red flag though, for me having worked as a independent contractor before, is that they are willing to pay as much as 300 dollars per assignment without taking any information whatsoever. That is illegal. They cannot run a legitimate company without specific forms in place. so, if someone is willing to give you a job out of the blue, and even send a check before you have even replied that you have accepted the job, it's a scam.
