FROM UNITED AMERICAN WEBSITE
WHAT SEPARATES US
With over 10 years of experience in the industry we take pride in our work. We are family owned and operated,
reliable, experienced people whom you can trust with your most cherished belongings.
Many moving companies will tell you the price you want to hear over the phone. Then on the day of the move,
that price has drastically increased. Don't be a victim of these practices.
Starting with a full and complete inventory of your belongings, we will give you an accurate, and Binding Estimate.
Remember, cheaper is not always better when it comes to your valued items.
We are fully insured, and only work with the best in the business.
We take the time to disassemble, wrap, and load your items with pride and quality.
We hired United American with the following understanding:
United American is a broker who would be contracting a state-state moving company from their network of “experienced professionals”, according to the company website. United American would be the primary contact for this transaction, communicating with its “experienced professional”, and providing support throughout the transaction. The contract specifically states, on page 3, that an “itemized inventory would be completed, indicating the condition at origin of items.”
For our move, the new “Binding Moving Estimate” totaled $5,369.44. Approximately 50% ($2,886.35) was due at the time the contract was signed, with the balance being split between two payments: $1,200 at time of pickup / $1,283.09 for the remaining balance at time of delivery. (Binding Moving Estimate attached). This was the final fee UNLESS additional items were added to the contents being moved.
Here is what actually occurred
On April 10, the United American hired moving company, CR7 (from N Bergan, NJ), arrived at 5:00 pm, much later than the 1:00-3:00 p.m. window we were told the prior day. CR7’s Driver, Amir, walked into our apartment and immediately stated, “This is a lot of stuff, this is a Full Truck. This would be like $8,000 to move.” We attempted, over a 5-hour period, to review the “Article List” from United American with the physical items within our apartment. He refused to review this article list and repeatedly said, “I am just telling you what I see.” He stated that there would be an additional sum of $8,605 ($13,974 total) for moving all contents in the apartment. He gave the ultimatum that CR7 could leave if we did not want to pay the higher estimate. My wife and I discussed our options and decided to move forward with CR7, dramatically reducing the items they would be moving to only our large pieces of furniture/appliances. We then rented a U-HAUL to move the remaining smaller furniture and boxes. Based on that decision, Amir provided a new “Interstate Bill”, adding an additional $3,099 to the “Total Moving Estimate” originally provided by United American. The original “Total Moving Estimate” increased from $5,369 to $8,468, with CR7 NOT moving all the items quoted on the articles list from United American, noted on page 7 of United American’s contract.
The final “Binding Estimate” provided by United American reflected 891 cubic feet to be moved, with a $1,900 “immediate reservation discount.” When the “Interstate Bill” was provided by CR7, the “immediate reservation discount” was NOT applied, and was communicated to us that CR7 “can’t give out that kind of discount.” We contacted United American to discuss the issues with it’s hired company. A United American supervisor was updated on the discrepancies of our estimate, who then called CR7 two separate times, requiring the discount be applied. On the first call, CR7 management communicated to the driver that the maximum they could discount was $582 ($5,000 “flat rate”). After the second conversation with CR7, another ultimatum was given to us that CR7 would move 30-40% of our large pieces of furniture and apply the “immediate reservation discount” OR move all the remaining furniture at the $8,468 mentioned above.
Because of the extreme stress of this situation, and the additional moving we would need to complete ourselves at 10:00 PM after the movers left, we succumbed to the $8,468. We were then required to rent a U-HAUL truck for $1,900 plus $167 in fuel, and frantically withdraw $1,200 additional dollars, to fulfill the excess of our NEW required pickup deposit. The final cost to move came to a total of $10,535 versus the $5,369.44 in the “Binding Moving Estimate” contract agreed to with United.
As stated above, this move was scheduled back in February, prior to the outbreak of the COVID-19 virus. We were laid off from our employment two weeks prior to the move. We had NO alternative but to pay CR7 what was demanded, from our limited savings, as we had no other residence options in Massachusetts. Our family recently purchased a home in North Carolina, and this was our only housing available.
The expectation is an immediate response from United American Management. We will be sending additional emails in regards to the EXTENSIVE DAMAGE to our furniture.
