My dentist referred me here for a root canal. Apparently they used to be in-network for Delta Dental (my insurance provider) until about 3 months ago, but aren't anymore. My dentist was unaware of this change.
When I called to make the appointment, they asked for my insurance provider, member ID, Group #, all of that and never said anything about being out of network.
When I got there they did another x-ray, even though my dentist sent over the multiple x-rays from various angles that he just took earlier this week, and did a quick 2min exam. They then tried to have me sign something else as they started prepping for the procedure but I asked for an estimate of my co-pay before they started.
Literally every other dentist I've ever been to has always provided me with an estimate before doing any work and I found it suspicious that they hadn't mentioned cost even once up to this point. They did, however, insist on having my payment card on file before I was seen.
When the nurse came back with the estimate, it said that just my portion/co-pay was over $800 for JUST the root canal since my dentist was going to do the post and crown himself next week. My dentist's receptionist had looked it up for me when I was there earlier this week and told me my co-pay for the specialist would probably be around $40-$60 because I opted for the best dental insurance my employer offers.
When I questioned the unexpectedly high cost, only then did the nurse quietly admit to me that it's because they're not in-network for Delta but that Dr. Hockin doesn't like them telling people that. I let her know that there was no way I was having the work done there when it would be less than 1/10th of the price at an in-network Endodontist and she completely understood.
When Dr. Hockins was out of earshot, the nurse told me that she's had multiple arguments with him about hiding their insurance status but any time she brings it up, he threatens her paycheck. She said she feels terrible for deceiving people and is desperately looking for another job as a result.
As I was leaving I asked her what the charge would be for what little they did today and she told me it would be $170. For comparison, my dentist did multiple x-rays (rather than just the ONE the endodontist's office did) and a much longer exam and the whole visit was covered by insurance, with zero co-pay.
At this point, it became clear that that's why he had her do that single x-ray despite the multiple angles that my dentist had sent him. He was trying to milk the appointment for all he could.
I told her I would pay the charge, but I was honest with her and told her that I would be filing a dispute with my bank over it since I wouldn't even have set foot in their office had they been honest about being out-of-network. She asked me to wait a moment and went to talk to Dr. Hockins. When she came back she told me he was waiving the charges, probably because he doesn't want anyone looking into the fact that he's intentionally hiding their insurance status from patients.
