Type of a scam Government Grant
Received a call from 202-565-8998. The person said I'd been selected for a $9000 grant the US Gov was giving out to citizens that had good credit and had never filed bankruptcy. I asked numerous times why a check could not be sent to the address they obviously have on file for me, but he stated each time that "the government doesn't send checks". He went on to give me an ID# to call and speak with his supervisor to obtain the remaining information.
While keeping caller#1 on hold on my home phone, I called the number provided (202)810-2249. I first spoke with a "Jake Brown", not a common name based on the accent. He also could not explain why a check could not be mailed. I would need to go to any local Wal-Mart, CVS, RiteAid, etc. and purchase $200 worth of iTunes cards. Once I had these, I was to call him back and give him the "codes" so that he could activate my "MTIC" money tracking ID code so that I could receive my tax free $9000.00. I asked why the purchase was necessary, and he still was adamant that if I wanted the money, I had to purchase these cards for my MTIC to be activated. I explained to Jake that I would be reporting this scam to the ScamPulse.com and he hung up on me.
I went back to my call in progress on my home phone and let Calvin read through his entire scripted document again. At which time I told him I'd be happy to call his supervisor because this sounded too good to be true!
This last person's name was Kevin Parker agent#8014. He also wanted me to drive safely to my local WalMart to purchase the iTunes cards and call him back with my photo id, a piece of paper, and my cellphone. At which time I explained to him, if a check could not be mailed then I was concerned about the purchase of the cards. I wanted to know why he couldn't just give me the MTIC number so that WalMart could give me the $9k. He became very upset and told me that if I didn't want the money, that was fine and he disconnected the call.
