I played green card lottery for my sister in my country for the first time and did not realize it was a scam. The website I used looked very official, so I thought I had to pay just like buying a regular lottery ticket. It was 129$ for each person, which was pretty high price, but I thought it is probably expensive because it is about permanent residency. So I paid by my credit card and only after found out it was free to register. It was late because scam website was closed.
