My wife told me of an amazingly good deal on the Nextdoor app this morning. Immediately, I smelled a rat. The 'discussion had been closed' three hours earlier; the party involved asked you to e-mail them instead of respond on the app or in a private conversation; the person listed on the account--upon close inspection--was "no longer listed" as a member of the Nextdoor neighborhood; etc. So, I (deliberately) played into the scammer's hands in order to strictly get more information and protect others. I played dumb, in two e-mails, to try to get the scammer to tip his/her hand.

Within seconds of exposing the scam, the post disappeared off the Nextdoor app.

Here is the letter this party sent me in response to my second letter:

Hello,

Thank you for your interest in purchasing my 2008 Honda CR-V EX-L. The reason I'm selling this SUV way below market value, is because I'm serving in Offutt AFB, Nebraska but I was promoted and transferred to Elmendorf AFB in Anchorage Alaska for a 3 years period, so I don't need it anymore at this time. I don't want to get old in my garage, and I need to sell it before December 14th. The SUV is in pristine condition, clear title, no dents or dings. Always garaged, never abused or raced, 76,192 miles, gas fuel type, 2.4L 4WD engine and automatic transmission. If you are interested, it's still available for sale and the price, as stated in the ad, is $1,800. Let me know if you are interested.
