I received the SAME email just now, except for a different company. Hiring manager and phone numbers are the same. Because I was recently scammed by another, I took greater notice at the grammatical errors and the use of apps that aren't typically used by legitimate HR departments. The job I applied to was in Greensboro, NC, so the first red flag was that my resume was forwarded to The Kentucky Board of Education. The red flags just continued from there:

I proceeded to communicate with the “Recruiting manager” via a text thread on an app called “Signal.” I never gave personal information as I had my suspicions. The conversation went as follows:
Me:
“Hello! Is this Mrs. Pamela Wells?”
Scammer:
“ Welcome to (UPS CAPITAL VENTURE). I believe you are here for the job interview and briefings where you will get to know all about the job position as well as the company information and history ?”
Me:
“ Yes, you are correct. I apologize for the lateness of my reply. I currently work the night shift at *current employer*. It’s from 6:00pm-6:00am. Would it be possible to assign a specific time for the interview? I have to work tonight and Tuesday night , but I am free the following two days at any time you’re open.”
Scammer:
“Alright let’s have the interview done on Wednesday. What time will you be available?“
Me:
“Thank you! Would 2:00-2:30pm work?”
Scammer:
“ Yes what’s your time zone ?”
Me:
*entered my timezone*
Scammer:
“ Alright message me then so we will proceed with the interview”
Me:
“ Absolutely! Thank you for your time.”
*Near Designated Time*
Me:
“ Hello! I’m ready to proceed with the interview.”
Scammer:
“ Alright Before we proceed ... I would love to know more about you. That would help me to categorize you and how best to interview you. I am Mrs Pamela Wells, I'm the recruiting manager at USP CAPITAL VENTURE FUND
(https://www.uspcapitalventurefund.com/). I am here to brief and interview you more about the opening position, Please introduce yourself and indicate your Full Name and Location.”
Me:
“ Thank you Mrs. Wells for your time today. I am *insert name* and I live *insert state & city.* I have often worked in more physically intensive jobs since I was sixteen. I have been wanting a change in this and have seeked employment which is less physically demanding. I want to be somewhere that can make use of my computer skills and offers room for some growth in these skills. I have also desired being apart of a team and/or company that assists individuals or other companies in success. This would help bring a bigger purpose to what I do.“
Scammer:
“ You will be working online and from home, the working hours are flexible and you can choose to work from anywhere of your choice, the Wages is $28.17 per hour during full working hours and the training wages is $21 per hour and you will be getting your payment weekly or bi weekly via direct deposit or paycheck and the maximum amount you can work a week is 40 hours.if you are employed you are going to be working as a full employee and not an independent contractor..... Let me know if you are interested so we can proceed.?”
Me:
“ Yes I am interested”
Scammer:
“ DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITY: Tracks data and source documents. Prepares and sorts source documents, and identifies and interprets data to be entered. Compiles, sorts and verifies data for accuracy. Contacts responsible parties or clients from other organizations to resolve moderately complex questions, inconsistencies, or missing data. Also perform Records keeping, keyboarding/data entry and performing a variety of other office tasks account balancing, invoicing recording, proper data analysis of sales records and recording pay slips into accounting database all these will be done through the use of the accounting Software, such as faxing or emailing confidently and positive attitude online from home.
Can you handle these duties effectively if trained towards it?”
Me:
“ Yes I can handle them”
Scammer:
“ The supervisor, who would be attached to you online, he/she would assign logs of duty daily and you would be required to work according to instructions, using the Microsoft office tools and the accounting software. Now the function of the accounting software is to arrange, formalize and manage the data you have processed, sent to your supervisor via email.
You will undergo a one-week training from your training supervisor, he/she will be training you on how to work with the programs accurately and other data entry works you will need to get it done. Your training will be done online on your PC and phone.Understood?”
Me:
“Yes I understand. Is it preferred that I use a Microsoft computer or Apple computer? I own both and have the applications installed on both.”
Scammer:
“ Benefits: Health, Dental, Life and AD&D Insurance,Employee Wellness and 401k plans,employee stock purchase plan(ESPP),Paid Time Off and Holidays. This takes place after working for the company after 30 days. Understood ?”
Me:
“ Yes, this sounds good to me and I understand”
Scammer:
“ I am going to ask you some questions now and your swift answer will be needed, once done with your answers simply write (DONE) Understood ?”
Me:
“ Yes, understood.”
Me: *after waiting forever for the questions*
“ Apologies if this appears rude Mrs. Wells, but I am very much so offended with how long this is taking. I was early to the designated time for this interview and have been sitting at my desk with my laptop ready and have been quick in every response to your messages while conveying information straightforward and direct. I have also been doing deeper research into this company and haven’t found it anywhere on credible sources. A company which matches the one you’re claiming to be from is stationed in the capital of Ukraine, which I’d be fine to work for a company from another country but the website you’ve sent me claims it’s from LA here in the USA. I will decline this position as I’m noticing that even if this is a legit company, it would appear you are incapable of doing your job in a time efficient and effective manner. This is one of my few days off from a long 12 hour, physically intensive job and I have wasted nearly 6 full hours of my time off attending to this interview. Have a nice day and look elsewhere for a potential hire.”
Something to keep in mind is that the scammer took forever to respond to my messages. The whole “interview” took from roughly 1:47pm till 6:29pm. I strongly recommend checking sources such as BBB, Indeed, LinkedIN, and Glassdoor to get better details about a company. That is something I did towards the end of the interview and I wish I had done so prior. I would’ve saved so much time. Never give information online that can compromise your privacy. Stay safe and hope this in depth peek into a genuine conversation with these scammers gives insight to how to better spot these people.
