Got a call at work. Caller ID showed "PECO ENGRY" so I answered thinking it was PECO Electric. Person then tells me that there records show I'm not getting government help in paying for electric utility and they are going to give me a 30% discount. His english wasn't great but he was making it sound like this was some sort of PECO authorized transaction. He wanted to have me write down an confirmation number and (he?) then calls Peco to make it official.
After some questioning, it became clear this is just another alternative electric supplier. Instead of the usual mail solicitations, this tactic leads a person to sign up as if they should do it. His information was incorrect. When I asked what the rate to compare was, he claimed my current rates were 11.x for electric and some other number for gas. Which makes the 30% seem attractive (9.24 for electric, 6.89 for gas). Except both numbers were wrong. They're obviously citing phony number for the current rates so that their rates are lower.
