A man from *** *** came to my door yesterday. He told me that I should have learned by now that *** was switching over to *** (which is true). He led me to believe that he was working for a subsidiary of ***, and here to confirm that I had not lost power in the mean time. He asked to confirm my account number, and explain that rates would be decreasing in a section of my bill as a result of the cross over. He then asked me to confirm, through a third party over the phone, that I received this information and I understood it. Still thinking that he meant the change from *** to ***, I consented. Though I was staying with ***, part of my electricity provider would be *** now. He did not ask for my email address or any payment information; only my name, phone, home address, and *** account number. I also did not have to sign anything.

It was only later, when I examined the information he'd left me, that I realized he had signed me up for an optional energy transfer. When I researched *** in more detail, it turned out that others lodged complaints of misinformation. On top of that, customers reported that rates remained fixed at a lower rate for a few months, and then skyrocketed afterwards. Trying to cancel has been a challenging process, as their help line is poorly staffed (on purpose, I presume), and cancellations mus be in writing, mailed to their headquarters, and canceling after 3 days results in a $50 fine. I'm still in the process of confirming my cancellation (because this only happened yesterday), and am eagerly awaiting a definitive end to this scam.
