I received a text message from Matthew Robbins who purported to have seen my resume on a job board and offered me a position with Vopak NV. Robbins indicated that he resided in Hilo, Hawaii. That was followed up by a detailed email from the Vopak NV Recruiting Team. The email identified the company and its values, strategy, organization structure, benefits, and work schedule. A briefing summary was also indicated starting with 2 weeks paid training, a list of the equipment to be used for the job in which the company would issue a check for me to purchase the equipment. This was followed by my receipt of a prepared Employment Offer Letter, Agreement Offer, Tax Matters/Employment Relationship Statement, and a blank IRS W-4 Employee's Withholding Certificate. I completed and signed the documents, submitted them to the hiring official (Matthews Robbins), and started receiving training tasks via Skype. I then received a check for $4950 for purchase of the equipment, which I deposited in my bank. The bank held the check pending verification. I advised the hiring manager of the hold on the check, to which he indicated that this would interfere with the timeline for staring work with my work team. He then asked me to provide $500 to $1000 of my personal funds for purchase of the equipment, which I refused to do. Later, I received notification from my bank that the check had been returned because the account could not be verified. I advised the hiring manager of the situation, but never received a response. I also was never paid for the three days of training, which basically included me providing answers or definitions to administrative terms which would be reviewed and scored by the HR Office. I regret completing and sending the W-4 Form as it included my Social Security Number. After a few days, I sent an email to the Vopak NV Headquarters indicated on their website, and was advised that this was a scam and that Vopak NV would never have requested an employee to send them personal funds. BEWARE!
