It started back in May of this year 2023. My son just graduated from high school and he just received $100.00 in cash from me as a graduation present. He is a Gamer and wanted a gift card to use for online purchases. I took his $100.00 in cash to my local Walgreens located on 150 hwy in Lee’s Summit, MO. I purchased a Vanilla Gift card. When I bought it, I did look and inspect the packaging and by all appearances, the card looked fine. I went to the register and put $100.00 funds on the card.
Later that evening, my son removed the packaging from the card and discovered that the card had been tampered with. Four of the numbers on the front had been scratched out and the three digit security code on the back had also been scratched out. My son notified me immediately and the next day I went back to Walgreens to see if they could help me. I was informed by the cashier that they don’t do refunds or exchanges on gift cards. I explained that the card was defaced and we couldn’t use it, and he said I needed to call the 1-800 number on the back of the card and file a dispute with the Vanilla Card Company. He stated, there is a lot of fraud with these cards and that’s why they don’t do anything with them after they are purchased.
I called Vanilla and after a long time of being on hold, I was able to file a claim with Incomm.inc. I emailed all the documentation they requested; a copy of my receipt, pictures of the card, front and back and my drivers license. I’m still waiting for a response. In the meantime, I called Walgreens the same week and spoke to the store manager and she also said they do not do anything to resolve the problem. I asked her why don’t they warn customers about the risk of buying these cards or put measures in place to protect the customer from being robbed. She said she would suggest that to her regional manager. In the meantime, I should just wait and hope that Vanilla and Incomm.inc make it right. She said it could take up to 30 days before I hear anything back.
Ironically, a couple of weeks later, I received a gift card in the mail from my mother who lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado. It is also a Vanilla Gift card. I opened it up, and again the card had been defaced and the funds had been depleted from the card. I was able to get the receipt from her and discovered that the card had also been purchased from a Walgreens in Colorado.
As you can imagine, I’m very upset that in less than a month, I’ve been robbed twice by these gift card purchases and nothing is being done to protect me or anyone who buys these cards. After doing some research on the internet, I found an article that 3 states have filed a class action suit against Walgreens for this exact thing.

At some point, either at the store or before the cards hit the store, scammers are stealing these gift cards and copying the information off the card, registering them and then returning the stolen card back to the self in the store. Then they wait for some unsuspecting person to buy a card and load it with funds. Some of these cards hold up to $500.00 in funds. The customer is out the money as soon as the funds are put on the card at the register and may not know for some time that the card is no good.
Walgreens and other stores are failing to protect the customer from this happening. The sad thing is, they know it's happening every day and they continue to do nothing to protect the public.
There are things they could do right away.
Lock the cards up so thieves do not have easy access to them.
Call the company to make sure the card has not been registered by another user.
Stop selling these cards until they are more secure.
Before funds are put on the card, remove the packaging at the register to make sure the card is still intact.
Walgreens has a partnership with Vanilla and Incomm.inc. They should be held responsible for failing to inform the customer of the possibility that the card could be compromised and that they don’t stand behind their product. There should be warning signs where these cards are sold. They should take more measures to protect the card from being stolen by keeping them under lock and key. Vanilla should put chips in the cards and remove all identifying information that could be easily stolen. Don’t allow the cards to be registered online unless one can prove they bought the card or make it to where they can’t be registered until it is purchased. Stop selling these cards!
I’ve lost 150.00 in less than two weeks, can you imagine how many other victims there are? Only Walgreens and Incomm know for sure. But how many other victims will it take before something changes? Something needs to be done to protect us!
note: Never was I informed of the policy for buying gifts cards at that store or is there a warning or policy posted anywhere in the store. I only found out about the policy after I was scammed.
Sincerely,
Pamela Willis
