10:33am Received call from my uncle
He said he got a call from his neighbor saying he got into some trouble last night as was in jail. He said got in an accident last night and rear-ended someone. He said he had been at a party and had a drink and the officer smelled liquor so had him take a test and he blew a .086. He needed money to get out of jail. My uncle got the name and number of the caller and said he would call his niece his niece would call them.
I (the niece) called Walter Piper 1.202.280.7940 at 11:02am and got a recording that said it was the Law office of Jeff Carter, Joe Hoffman, Peter Bradley and to leave a message. I left my name, number, my uncle’s name and told them I was calling about my Uncle’s neighbor who was in jail. I got on the Spokane County Jail Inmate Roster and the neighbor’s name was not there and it was updated at 11:00am that morning so I was suspicious. I also looked up what area code is 202 and it was Washington DC which was another red flag.
My call to 202.280.7940 was returned at 11:23am, it came is as Unknown Caller.
The caller identified himself as Walter Piper, a public defender. He said my Uncle’s neighbor got in an accident last night at 10:30pm; that he rear-ended a person driving a Hertz rental car and it did $4,500 damage. The officer smelled liquor and my uncle’s neighbor blew a .086 and that was slightly higher than the legal limit of .08. He said he went to court this morning and pleaded not guilty for him because there was no injury and because he blew just slightly above the legal limit. He said the insurance company, State Farm, agreed to pay the $4,500 but it takes 4-7 days to process the claim. The judge agreed that if $4,500 was paid to the people in the rental car today he would drop all charges and nothing would show up on the neighbor’s record.
I asked him if his wife knew about this and he said no, that the neighbor wanted to tell her in person.
I went along with it, knowing it was a scam. I said OK, how do I pay it. He asked me for my zip code which I gave him (not my real one). He said I could pay at Best Buy, Walmart or Target. I said Walmart. He said to go into Walmart with a credit card or cash and get 4 - $1,000 pre-paid gift cards and 1 - $500 pre-paid gift. He said if the clerk asks if I want to put anything in the comment section to say “Gift” and don’t say anything about the neighbor being involved in an alcohol related accident because the people in the Hertz car did not know that part. He said that once I have the cards it in my hands to call him immediately to give him the numbers and the security code numbers.
I asked him to verify his name again and he spelled it – Walter Piper and his assistant’s name is Sylvia. He asked how soon I would be able to do this and I said as soon as possible.
