We rented a townhome from Portia in 2020. It was the most predatory lease agreement I’ve ever encountered. Many hidden expenses came up throughout our tenancy including filling the water softener salt and being held financially responsible for required maintenance to the property. No maintenance requests were ever fulfilled and I was always insulted for reporting issues. When the time came to renew our lease, I had to give a 4 month notice to end our vacancy. After I informed Portia that I didn’t want to renew, hidden expenses and threatening emails including trying to charge us for late rent for 4 months that we had never been late on. When asked to provide written documentation that the charges were filed in error, she blatantly ignored the request. She continued to email us requesting showings after our notice, which we were more than happy to accommodate. However, when she did find a tenant we were aggressively asked to move out a month before our lease ended to accommodate the new tenant. We were also happy to do that, since we were tired of being robbed. Then came the move out checklist. We paid $150 for mandatory professional carpet cleaning for two rooms and the staircase and were charged $100 for not having a closet professionally cleaned. We were charged over $700 to paint a 3x3 wall space where nail holes were covered with original touch up paint that had faded into a lighter shade. They had not painted in so long that one of the “touch up” paint cans had molded and there were places in the walls that the old paint had been coming through. In other areas, the paint was thinning so much that it came completely off with a wet washcloth. Other areas included visible repairs that were poorly done and not maintained. We were charged $150 for hole repairs that when asked to be clarified on an itemized list, were again ignored. Portia does not appear to have a singular business who accepts responsibility for her rental properties. We were originally under the impression that this was a personal rental property leased by her, but received communications from all different business names and addresses during the term of our lease.
