Type of a scam Employment
The next day I called the number he texted from and it immediately disconnected, twice. I texted him and he said he had ear surgery and could not talk on the phone, but could text. Our texting went back and forth for a while until I finally understood what he was wanting, and that was to build both bookcases shown in the pictures. He was adamant about wanting a quote. I gave him a ballpark for the two together at $8000, which he immediately accepted (red flag #2). He then said he would send me $3000 to secure his place in my production queue even though I told him I don’t take money up front, until it’s time to build the project (red flag #3). I told him that I would need his address, and he gave me an initial address of 225 S. Steele St in Denver, which, being familiar with Denver, and looked on the map and found that it was in the middle of a shopping center (red flag #4). I took a screenshot of the map and send it to him and told him he must’ve had the wrong address. That’s when he changed his location and said that he had just moved to a new location in a different suburb of Denver - see above. I told him that I would type an estimate for him and get that over to him. I can tell from the conversation that something was not right with the entire process and was out of the norm for how I conduct business and I decided to see where it went.
On Tuesday, May 19, I typed a formal estimate for him which, after tax and installation came to over $9000. I emailed it to him and received a prompt reply stating that it was an acceptable quote and he would like to pay me half of the money upfront to secure his spot in line. I again told him that that was not how I did business and explain the process yet again. Here is what he wrote to me:
“ Good to read from you am satisfied with the total cost, very affordable and I am willing to pay up the sum of $4740 as an upfront payment so that you can secure the job for me but i will be needing alittle favor from you..i hope to read from you soon? “
I replied back that I did not need a down payment upfront and asked him what he needed. This was his reply:
“ Sounds good but am seeking for this favor due to my sickness am in the hospital for my surgery and I will like it to be fixed while am away because am relocating there, i wanna made the upfront payment so that you can secure the job for me secondly i would like you to hold the upfront with you i believe in 'KARMA' so i wanna build my trust on you..i would like you to send me an invoice's of $10,9450,00 once the funds as hit your account you be holding $4740,000 as a deposit for the work need to be done and you will send the remaining $6,100 to the initial owner of the property via cash app once he receives the money he will make the document of agreement of permission and send it down to you, so you have a copy with you as a prove to show to anybody who come ask for it
thank you i'll like to make things easy for you so this is the Breaking Down...................................Below
payment deposit :$4,740
Initial owner's Fees: $6,100
Tip (for helping me): $100
credit card Charges (if required) “
I again told him this was not how I did business and if he wanted to do business the way that I do, he was welcome to but otherwise I was not interested. He wrote back and said that he would keep in touch, whatever that means. He then attempted to text me but I did not reply.
This guy is a scam artist. I’ve dealt with people like him for years in my previous career and he’s targeting businesses as well as individual people. Keep an eye out. Anyone who would blindly accept a work offer of $10,000 without knowing me or anything about me and be so willing to send me money is up to no good.
