Type of a scam Employment
On 3/4/24 Babul emailed and asked me to sign an agreement allowing Yash Technologies to represent me for the position. He also stated that the rate had changed to $45/hr and asked me to email him agreeing to the lowered rate. He stated verbally that the rate had changed because the role was changed to hybrid rather than on-site.
On 3/5/24 I had a first-round interview via Teams with Babul’s colleague Maithily Akkinapally. Afterward, Babul contacted me and stated that I passed the first-round interview and that he would set up an in-person interview with the employer. The interview was set up for 3/12/24 at 11:00 am but was later moved to 3/19/24. I was told it was moved due to team meetings that took place the week of the 12th.
On 3/19/24, I had an in-person on-site interview at Caterpillar Building AD. Upon arrival, I was asked to contact a man named Surya Teja Chayanam at 309 287-0283; he would escort me to the interview. I called him and he instructed me to go into the building and go to the receptionist, which I did. The receptionist did not know this person, but he appeared from behind the security door and let me in. He escorted me to an empty cubicle on the second floor and had me wait. After a few minutes, he asked me to follow him into a meeting room where there were two people who allegedly worked for Caterpillar and were the hiring managers. They told me their names; however both were unique names, and I do not remember them. They conducted the interview, which seemed to go very well. Surya escorted me out afterward, however he was on his phone the entire time and I was unable to talk to him.
Within the next couple of days, I received a call from Babul who stated that I was selected for the project, and that he would get back to me with a start date and offer letter.
Over the next several weeks, I spoke with Babul on a regular basis to check on the status of the position. I was told multiple reasons for the delay: the manager was on vacation, the position was not budgeted to start until May, etc. During each contact with Babul, I asked him to reiterate that I had the job, which he did.
On 5/8/24, I had a call with Babul. His reception was very poor, so I asked him to email me. He sent me an email stating that the project was open, and I was selected. He needed just a little more time to get the start date. At that point I responded to his email with some points of clarification. He never responded to that email and has not answered any of my calls or messages since. After a week, I reached out to Maithily Akkinapally through LinkedIn. She has never responded.
Through LinkedIn I saw that Babul was connected to a former colleague of mine who was now employed at Caterpillar in HR. I messaged her through LinkedIn, and she set up a call with me on 5/17/24. I explained what happened. Later that afternoon, she responded to me stating that they investigated it, and that they do not show any open position that I described or any record of me interviewing. Surya Teja Chayanam was not a Caterpillar employee.
Although this company did not directly steal cash from me, they led me to believe that I would be starting a job which has cost me greatly due to lack of income. I have saved all emails and texts in this regard.
