I was shopping for basement flooring at Floor & Decor and stopped Wilbert, who looked like a construction worker. I asked if his opinion, if I was picking the right materials, etc. he seemed more than happy to help.

Since I don’t have a contractor at that time, I took his card thinking he might be a possibility.

I called a few days later and he came out to give his official estimate. I okay’d the price and he came by for me to sign a contract.

I paid him half the money upfront, and supposedly, he came by to put an acid wash down on my unfinished concrete flooring to get it ready for the tile flooring I had purchased.

There was nothing but excuse after excuse of why he wasn’t showing up to the job. First, it would be that it was raining outside, and when I asked what it had to do with him doing a basement flooring, he would say that he can have his materials out in the rain. We finally had an agreed upon day of Monday morning.

I cleared out my entire basement waiting for his arrival. When I woke up that morning, I woke up to a text from him at 4am saying he was passing a kidney stone and would call me once he left the hospital. He even sent a picture!

I let a day or two go by without reaching out to him, believing that he was going through health issues. Finally, by the third day, I reached out to him to check on him. I didn’t even mention the basement work. I never heard back from him. Silly me, kept giving him the benefit of the doubt. Since I spoke to him in the store that day and when he came out to put the cause wash down, we had a lot of conversations, and it was hard for me to believe that somebody who is so friendly, would be capable of doing this.

Unfortunately, he did. His phone was been off since he sent me that text. I see that his business address is listed as NJ, but I live on Long Island, and met him at Floor & Decor in Bohemia.

Now that I know it’s officially a scam, I have sent a bunch of texts and emails. He will not be getting away with this!
