- When I initially received the call, it was a recording that referenced the "new Fair Debt Collection Act." I Googled the Act and found that it was enacted in 1977. Not very new.
- I pressed "1" to speak with the "representative" and asked about the Act. He pushed back and said that the conversation was about debt relief and that he would enroll me now.
- When I ask about details of the company, the "representative" kept pushing me to enroll in the program first and then get details about the company.
- The "representative" eventually gave me the company's web site information. When I went to the web site, I got the company address and put it into Google Maps. The address is that of a house in Portland, ME, with no signage indicating a company at that address.
- The company called from an out-of-state phone number, claiming to be local to me. I offered to call the company back, using the phone number given on the web site. The "representative" pushed back and asked why I would call them back, since they were already on the phone with me.
- I said that the company, "Debt Free America," felt more like a scam to me and asked them to not call me back, and hung up. A couple of minutes later I received a call back from the "representative" who said something to the effect of he got the message/he found me and hung up. It felt like a threat.
- Caller ID of the initial call: 832-683-4000. Caller ID of the call back: 183-245-6987. Supposedly the the company is in Maine with area code 207.
