I emailed the inquiry on a Craigslist ad for a rental that seemed way too low of a price so I was already set. Tom asked for my phone number in the ad so I sent it. Then I got a text message saying he needs my email address to send me instructions. I was more suspicious, I gave him my throw away email address because I did want not want him to have my full name. [email protected] sent the email as follows:

Hello!

Thank you for your interest in this property. You can schedule an appointment now or tomorrow when it is most convenient for you, from 9.00 AM to 6.00 PM, Monday through Saturday. All utilities and parking are included in the rent. A $500 security deposit is required (no advance deposit; everything is due after viewing the property). And it's completely pet-friendly.

Before we discuss the details and set an appointment time, I'd like to examine your criminal history and credit history. To check your credit score, visit {Apply from here ➢➢➢ mycurrentcreditscore.com/cfcs2} and fill out the form.! After you've completed that, please send me a screenshot of your report, as it is required for rent. To schedule the appointment, I check the score for that day on my preferred website and then discuss the details. If the score is good, we may go over the details at the meeting. A minimum credit score of roughly 500 will suffice.

Must use a given link because it is connected with my listing. This will help you meet me completely and safely...

[Note: I will compromise with disability/SSI/Students/Teachers/Homeless/Single Fathers & Mothers with kids/ people who are struggling too much with their lives.

Thank you & Stay safe!

I drove by the property and there is no for rent sign out front. I looked up who is my current credit score.com and it was just created March 2024. I looked at the property owner and it is not Tom. This is obviously a phishing scam to get data, hope you don't enter yours before it's too late.

I was looking for an apartment and found a really nice one on craigslist for a strangely low price, but also noticed that while the ad said the apartment was in Evanston, the craigslist city used to list the ad was Carbondale, IL - hours away. So i emailed asking if the apartment was still available and if it was actually in Evanston or Carbondale. I received a text a couple hours later (from a Miami number) from someone claiming to be the "property owner," asking for my email address so he could send me the details. I thought this was odd because he could have just replied to the email I sent him through CL. But I gave it to him, and he then sent me an email explaining that before giving the property address (which was already provided in the CL ad), I needed to go to this credit check website and retrieve my credit score, and send him back a screenshot of it and that I needed to use that specific link because it was tied to his listing and would be the safest way to check my credit and allow him to perform a criminal background check, all of which he needed to do before I could see the place. The email also said that a score of 500 would be enough and included a note at the end that he could work with students/ people on disability/SSI, single parents with kids, a few other scenarios that are common deterrents for landlords, or "anyone struggling with life."

I started to fill out the site with my name and address but then the next page asked for my social security #, as well as required me to sign up for a "free" two week trial which i could then cancel.

I then sent him a text that I didn't feel comfortable entering my ss# through a site that is being tracked and that i didn't want to sign up for a trial membership, and asked if I could just send him a screenshot of my bank's credit reporting info for now.

He responded that I could just cancel the membership ("no problem") and reirerated that I need to use that site so that he could do the background check, or something and to let him know once it was complete.

At this point I googled credit check scams and found your very informative article (thank you). I also googled the creditcheck website on a scam website checker and they gave it a safety score of 39 and deemed it likely not trustworthy. Also found out that it's registered in Iceland and the owner has hidden their identity and that several other scam websites are hosted by the same domain.

So I sent a link to your article back to his text and said "Thanks but I'm going to pass."

I have screenshots of the entire email and text exchange and CL ad if I'm allowed to include those with this report.

I also ran into this exact thing, craigslist ad, near Nashville TN. I emailed him, but he texted me from 856-431-2288, but used the same email [email protected] listed above and also directed me to yourcurrentcreditscore.com/cfcs1us (youcurrentcreditscore.com)
I hope posting this makes it easier for others to google info for "Tom Mclean" Property owner and avoid falling for this scam
