After signing a very convincing contract they asked for payment for work equipment via Signal app with a linked paypal account. The Signal interview was a chatbot but very convincing before an operator took over for payment details. They were a little too flexible with payment terms which was another red flag in addition to using Signal, and the upfront payment without an invoice to a Nigerian name revealed the obvious scam, using [email protected] .

I had applied for 1-15 jobs in the past week and was overjoyed when i received a message requesting an interview for a role that would pay $35/hr.

The interview was conducted via Signal communication App for a chat support position with ZenDesk. Since it was for a chat position, the chat interview didn't feel like a red flag.

After receiving and agreeing to offer letter, scammer proceeded to describe equipment needed for home office setup.

They claimed to put a request in to their accounting department for a check and requested that I deposit it into bank account.

After doing so, they wanted to purchase equipment from vendors but only a small portion of the money was instantly available.

Instead of waiting, they wanted to proceed ahead with partial payment but wanted to complete through stock payments (cryptocurrency) . This felt wrong but i proceeded because I was desperate to work again.

They asked if I could cover the rest of the check amount until it clears but i declined to do so and advised that the check would have to clear first before we proceeded forward. I said that I could reach out to my credit union to speak directly about the check deposited but they were adamant that I should let the process proceed without that. That was a red flag.

I didn't respond to he scammer again, realizing what had just occurred and how I would be liable for the funds dispersed once the potential fraudulent check gets kicked back.

I did some further research on the check, and confirmed that they were using legitimate routing numbers and address information for the company but the placement of the information on the check was incorrect for the bank that issued the check. I also realized then that the check was sent from a mail.com email address and not from an official ZenDesk email address.
