Approximately 1:30pm yesterday I experience a bright red screen on my computer with a loop message to call a number immediately because my computer has a an infection that needed to be stopped! (malware virus, trojans). The initial person was representing a 3rd party virus repair for Microsoft. Did NOT make that clear! They identified a multitude of viruses and Trojans that I would crash if this wasn't repaired. 2nd time this has happened to me. The other was 3 weeks ago....same process! In order to remove malware I would have to use my credit card for $100/ week or $700/ month (1st time) and a one time fee of $500. I was desperate and wanted to get control of my laptop. 1st time I couldn't afford to pay (Thinking this was a scam) and when it happened a 2nd time I wanted to see how far they would go. I was going to put the charge on AMEX, but I was told that AMEX's server was down (it wasn't...I had just used it.) and that I would need to use a credit card or even better a Debit Card. I said I didn't have that. They would wait on line while I transferred money to use. I hung up then and pulled the plug on the laptop. He ("Kevin" - Indian accent) called back two times. Best Buy confirmed I got scammed and they stated I never should have called them, and that I should contact BBB or them (Geek Squad). Didn't know they were really scam artists at the time. Beware of these people! The Geek Squad at Best Buy were great. Can't someone stop this company? I lost no money (that I know of), but was awfully close.
