Type of a scam Online Purchase
We conversed on Instagram, where he offered the product for sale, specifying Bitcoin or Cash App for payment. Due to security concerns, I opted to use my USAA Zelle account for a purchase of 200mg mushroom pills, totaling $200. However, after I made the payment, Markle became unresponsive, causing me to worry. Due to my attempts to contact him through Instagram and Signal, the recommended chat app, I received a response from Markle with an official-mail service website and a tracking number – their, what I thought legitimate website bolstered their credibility.
Upon receiving a tracking number, I felt reassured. However, on the delivery day, the carrier requested $323 for package insurance, promising a refund upon delivery. They insisted on Bitcoin for the payment, claiming their system only accepted exact amounts to proceed. Despite sending the specified amount, they alleged receiving less and demanded an additional $333, guaranteeing a refund of $638.
This raised my suspicion, yet I proceeded. After the amount was sent they send an email requesting the front and back of my DL and PII information and I submitting the requested information along with a fake SSN, feeling increasingly uneasy. Despite assurances from a supposed manager and an apology for the inconvenience, a demand for an extra $477 for a COVID health insurance policy solidified my realization that I was being scammed. I ceased any further proceedings and decided to report these individuals.
