Centerpoint Energy - Imposter Reports & Reviews (87)

UtilScammer called my cell phone. They said they were with CenterPoint Energy and would be cutting off my gas service in 45 min and needed payment to avoid cut off. I did not give them any info and hung up. I then called CenterPoint and discovered it was definitely a scam and my account was in good standing with a zero balance.

Told me we owed money to not get our power turned off. When I asked if I could online to CenterPoint online and pay it she told me it would be too late and my power would be cut off so I need to give her my bank information so that they could process it immediately.

I received a call from CenterPoint energy stating that they would turn off the electricity within 30-45min. I took the call, the person then ask me to pay both months of January and February because they could not retrieve my payments because of a new system. She asked then to make a first payment via Zelle, then she claimed that I entered an incorrect amount and that I have to enter the correct amount. Finally she said that I needed to enter the total amount in order to get a reimbursement. She was very polite and I had the impression that she was working with other coworkers, taking calls also. She tried the day after to call me again, this time directly so I was able to see her number. I immediately told that this was a fraud and she hung up.

Phone number (713) 207-2222 called with automated message stating it was CenterPoint Energy and that my services were going to be shut off in 30-45 minutes due to delinquency. Then prompted to press 1 to speak with a representative. I hung up without pressing anything or speaking to anyone. I verified the phone number via Google search, but new the prompt was a scam/incorrect since payments are automated. Called CenterPoint Energy directly myself and verified my account status wasn’t in delinquency. TOTAL SCAM

Automated call indicates power turned off in 30-45 minutes then go to a person telling need $250-499 because payment not received due to change in payment system. The caller was hired as a 3rd party to collect money to prevent loss of service for the customer. did not ask for bank information but did ask for direct transfer via Zelle or other way the bank allowed transfers. I had a strong feeling that it was a scam and should have gone with my gut. Also, they will tell you that the payment did not go through and to send it again. In which I declined to do.

Robocall recording warned me that my electric service would be interrupted in 45 minutes. I was instructed to touch the 1 key to speak to a representative about billing.

Received robocall that my energy would be disconnected in 30-45 minutes. I pressed “1” to speak to rep - was transferred and then spoke with someone in person who put me on hold. I hung up. They then called back and said we had gotten disconnected and they were trying to collect $990 for pastdue payments. I told him he didn’t know what he was talking about and was out of his mind -

I’ve never been late paying my bills

Individual(male) called my mother from a number listed as Centerpoint Energy. Same claimed that she was behind 3 months on her light bill and that she had to pay 400 immediately or her services would be cut off in the next 40 minutes. She said she paid all her utilities then individual became insistent and gave her another number to call with a supposed case number. She immediately notified me I notified her there were other claims of similar scams and that Id report it immediately.

Got a call from the official Centerpoint Energy number for power outages today. The caller obviously spoofed the number. They said there was a system upgrade that notices were sent about, but we never responded, and claimed our power was going to be cut off. I was even put on hold while the 'called their tech to tell them not to disconnect us.' When I tried to get more information about the supposed upgrade and why this was needed, no clear answer was given, just talking in circles. They then said we needed to send them over $400 to verify the account, but that it would be refunded. To prevent disconnection, the payment had to happen immediately and they said credit cards and checks would take 2 days to process. More than once, they asked me if I was familiar with Zelle. I told them I wasn't comfortable sending money by Zelle, because there is no way to get it back. At this point (apparently I was a little too familiar with Zelle for them) the guy got very short with me. To see if I could illicit a return number from him, I asked to call back. He just said to call the main company number, gave me a fake name and ID number, then hung up. I'm going to give actual Centerpoint a call to let them know what happened and that this is still an ongoing issue for their customers.

In short, while Zelle is a convenient service, only use it to send money to individuals you know personally. Never use it for anything else. There is NO way to get your money back. This is a way they streamlined their system and made it so they don't hold anyone's money for a time.

My husband received a phone call on Monday 02/21/2022 from Centerpoint Energy (713-207-2222) with an automated message stating that our electric was over due and that we had 30-45 min before it was to be disconnected. He could press one to speak to a representive to take care of the issue. He pressed one and spoke to a "rep" and then my husband conferenced myself into the call, since I pay the bills. We both spoke to him and he said that we were $300+ overdue and needed to pay to avoid disconnect. I told him that was incorrect and that I wanted to speak to the person above him. The "billing manager" came on the phone and told me that our account had been red flagged and the payments I had made were frozen and if we would send them a payment that day, they would stop the disconnect notice and once they have done an investigation into our account, they would let us know that everything if "fixed" and we would call a number to get a refund, so we wouldn't be double billed. When my husband said that we would make the payment, she told us that the only ways to make payment was to either to go to the main office in Houston, Tx off of Louisiana St (which is correct and anyone can google it) or we could use our banking app to Zelle money directly. She also was adamant about the time limit and trying to rush us to make the payment because if we didn't before the time limit, it would about a week to 2 weeks before they could reconnect us.

I received a phone call from a number that I recognized as a number for Centerpoint Energy (713-207-2222). I answered the call. It started off saying it was Centerpoint Energy and something about a disconnect. I then was transferred and a gentleman on the other end started saying my service was going to be disconnected in a short amount of time, that my last three payments were frozen due to not going to the new "bill pay" service, and I needed to pay the charges now to avoid the disconnection of service and that my prior payments would be refunded to me. Began to think this was fishy so I said I would call back. He then asked if I was familiar with Zelle. I then hung up. Found a news article online about this being a scam.

Yesterday my wife received a call from someone who represented himself as with Centerpoint Energy. He said if we did not pay our past-due bill immediately, our gas service would be shut off within 30 minutes. He gave her a callback number when she refused to pay. I tried calling that number but got no answer. Today, I received a call from this same operation, apparently because they had a record of my having tried to call them yesterday. Someone named Dominic Frank said if I didn't pay $198.17 now (representing 3 months' past due payments), our gas would be shut off. When I refused, he offered to file a "claim" for us, which would allow us to reconnect within 48 hours and get a refund of the payment I made, once the matter was sorted out. I still refused to pay. We hung up. We then called Centerpoint and confirmed that our account is current, the autopay procedure is active, and that Centerpoint never calls customers about matters such as this. But I was impressed by the tenacity and sophistication of the caller.

The robocall announced that it was a call from CenterPoint Energy, and that my power would be disconnected within 45 minutes. Then I was to press "1" to talk to a representative. I hung up at that point suspicious about the call. The phone number did not have a CenterPoint ID associated with it.

They called me from the center point Energy number and there was an automated message that my service will disconnect today and that my payments were not going through. They asked that I pay $495 to stop the service from disconnecting which will be reimbursed shortly. To reimburse the payment they ask you to make another payment to get a code and get a total reimbursement of everything you paid and so on.. They asked me to use Zelle so the payment goes through quickly to avoid service interruption today. Than when you ask for the reimbursement they ask you to make another payment but just to get a code to return the money.. They took $3000 from my account. They seemed very professional and convincing and I had no option but to pay to avoid service interruption. They stay on the line with you till you make the payment and promise to stay on the line till your money is reimbursed but unfortunately they keep telling you that it didn't go through and you end up paying a lot. I think Center Point energy should be informed about that because they are using their name and number to steel peoples money.

Received multiple phone calls from Center Point Energy threatening to cut off services within the next 30-45 minutes. It identified that I had a past due balance and was going to have services shut off. It was an automated message that requested to press one to be transferred to a customer support representative.

I hung up and did not follow through, but have received the same call again about a week later.

My caller ID read: Centerpoint Energy. I use Centerpoint only for power outage reporting, etc. They informed me that my energy carrier was using their platform now and that my payments for the last 4 months had not been registered. The result according to them was that my power would be cut off within 45 minutes through an automated system. They guided me to use Zelle's online transfer from my account. The first time I sent an amount, they put me on hold and said it was the wrong amount so they would refund and had me repeat the process with "the correct amount." The final step was to "refund" so they had me add the two amounts together to receive a refund from Zelle platform. It actually charged me again--totalling almost $2000. I had them on the line still, so went into a Wells Fargo bank lobby to discuss with the clerk on speaker phone what was happening. The scammer hung-up at that point, but it was too late. My account had already been debited. I reported to Wells Fargo fraud department--got claim numbers, but they do not take ownership of what happens with Zelle. At this point, I still do not know what Zelle's protection policy is.

someone from centerpoint energy called me and said that my gas will be disconnected of i dont pay a 400 plus dollar fee thru zelle and it will be returned to me within 24 hrs the persons name thru wells fargo is celine…i didn’t save her phone number she provided for me to send my payment thru zelle…i went to check my balance in the centerpoint website and i am current with my payments…

A phone number labeled CenterPoint energy brazosport called me and stated that we were overdue on our bill. They asked me to verify some information but would not answer any of my questions about our account other than to say it was past due and was being referred to their legal department. When they try to forward me to their legal department, I hung up and called the CenterPoint energy main number to verify my account status.

This is one of the most believable scams I have run into since we adjusted out of the house a few months prior and had encountered some difficulty closing out our account. The phone number also has a center point energy caller ID and does not flag as spam or suspicious when calling.

They asked for my full name and zip code but I don't believe they actually recorded that info or looked it up in any way while on the phone.

A automated message call was received on my cell number and then on my husbands cell number this morning. It said our service was being disconnected in the next 30-45 minutes, then the call ended.

When we tried calling the number back, it was a voice recording that sounds like Centerpoint, saying to enter your account number or phone number etc. We do not have an account with Centerpoint at all, we live in Oklahoma!

We've tried calling the 800 number on Centerpoint's website but they say due to high call volume you must call back at a later time. There's no way to speak to anyone at Centerpoint directly that we can find today. But we need to know if someone has opened an account in our name in Texas, stolen our identity or what is going on?? It would be better if these utility companies had a fraud reporting hotline number for individuals to call and be able to speak to a representative directly.

Robo call stating past due account and disconnect of services in 45-60min
