Received phone call from CENTERPOINT ENE (caller ID 713-659-2111) on elderly parents land line. Told bill was past due and electricity scheduled to be turned off in 30-45-mins. Need to make payment immediately from bank account to stop electricity from being turned off. Requested balance owed $498.55, they asked which bank I used and walked me through making ZELLE payment. Asked if I could round up payment to $500 response sure that is not a problem, they said payment was not received and too send the exact payment $498.55 which I did. Scammer (Indian accent) said payment not received check my cell phone for fraud alert from bank and enter yes. She was a little agressive and said neither payment received do you have another bank account. I said no and transfer me to a manager, well Robert Gomez, floor supervisor, said actual past due payment $998.56, I said that did not make sense, he said call back tomorrow for refund. Sent third payment through ZELLE then started thinking this did not make sense. Checked most recent bill from Center Point and account balance is credit of $12. Scammers provided two cell phone numbers to call tomorrow (510)901-5570 and (631)532-8272. Called a short time later requesting refund and told to call back tomorrow, kept calling over dozen times and they would not answer either number. Bank - CHASE referred me to ZELLE and they referred me to CHASE. Neither will refund money considered cash. Scammed out of $1,997.11.

The scammer claimed to be Centerpoint Energy and claimed my service will be disconnected in 30-45 minutes for non payment. It prompts you to press 1 to be connected to an agent. The number displayed on my phone said centerpoint energy and an actual centerpoint phone number. My bill is current and no need to get this call. I’ve received about 6 calls today.

I received a scam phone call from Centerpoint energy stated my account was 2 months behind and that my services was going to be disconnected. I said that's not true because I am paid up and due for this month only. He said my utility company sent a letter stated my payment platform changed and my previous payments went some where else. The rep said the workers was on site going to disconnect and I needed to make payment ASAP. He transferred me so I can pay this so call deposit to keep might services on. As I was going off to the new rep I guess she realized she wasn't getting a payment from me and hung up.

Robot call said my energy service would be cut off in 45 min to an hour and I should press 1 to be connected with collections department. I hung up and googled if there was a scam and sure enough there have been other reports.

Have received two calls in two days; first, an automated message says "your electrical service is scheduled to be disconnected for non-payment in 45 minutes and then switches to a live person. The first time this happened, our internet service was down and I was unable to check the status of my account. The person wanted me to use Zelle in conjunction with my bank account to send payment to "cpbilling" and a recipient named "Jenny". as the call progressed, I became more suspicious that it was legitimate, but not before a transaction appeared to have been processed. When I told the caller I was going to contact with CenterPoint and my bank, he hung up. I immediately called my. bank and was able to get the transaction stopped. I reported the event to their Fraud Division and changed my online information immediately. My electricity service account was not overdue. Then I received the same type of call today, and hung up before the first robocall had finished.

Robocall claiming account 2 months past due and service would be shut off in 45 if payment not made. Press 1 to speak to an agent. I hung up.

This happened to us today and it so happens they knew exactly how much we owed stating our payment wasn't processed do to incorrect account i formation leading our bank to deny payment. They had me send them a direct payment through zelle

They told me to enter specific numbers so it would be applied immediately to our acc. So I added the contact info arguing with them the whole way through at which point I had my husband listen in and talk to them. He was even convinced because they somehow had all our acc information through center point. So after entering 777.77 as a "routing number" where the pay amount was. I again said no way, thats to send 777.77 to them. He stated I needed to listen to him as he walked me through this. He said down below I will enter barcode in the memo field. This would let my bank know its a barcode number to allow them to request the 29.41 we owed. After I did what he instructed low and behold it sent them 777.77 of our money because I checked my acc app. My husband lost his mind and demanded they put that money back right away. The guy "Michael" stated he made a mistake and he could rectify it and wanted me to speak to his supervisor for help. I was put in hold, elevator music and all. A man by the name of "shawn Maquenzie" said he could refund this back through zelle, he instructed me and my husband to enter 827.00 that was the 777.77 that Micheal screwed up and a discount for our troubles. I said again HELL NO. You are scamming me. He said if this was a scam how would they have my acc info address how much I owed and was put in hold after michaels mistake. I still told him no and he said maam if you dont pay the amount due our service will be interrupted. Everything he was saying made sense. So again we are back in zelle and he had me go to memo and enter refund llk-0093465774. I did that and a refund button popped up, he told me to click that, so I did. So I check my app and they hit me for ANOTHER 827.00 I lost my mind. He kept telling me and my husband to calm down. The money will reverse in about 25 min. He offered to stay in the phone and wait with us, or if it didnt show back up to call 1800...... which is centerpoints actual phone number. I said ok. After hanging up I immediately called my bank. I was directed to the fraud dept. So guess what, those pos knowing my husband had cancer stole from us 1,604.77. My husband and I only make together, 1676.00 a month right now because he isn't working he is on disability ins. So we are out a whole months worth of bill money. I have no idea how we will make it. Our credit is going to be destroyed, which we work so hard to keep good. How are we to recover car payments, ins, property taxes etc. These scammers managed to upset the life of a cancer victim, without the least bit of remorse or guilt. The bank feels like it had to have been someone on the inside working for center point. So we were instructed to notify them. That got us no where. They didn't care either. Their customer accounts are compromised and all they had to say for themselves is we are sorry. Center point does not use live personal calls to collect money. How were we to know that???? Center point changed from vectren about 3 months ago. We have no idea how they do buisness. So here is what someone said to me. Hang up on anyone, even if they are legit, then call the company back. Scammers are getting extremely smart. I have never fallen for a scam, but these guys knew things only center point could have known. I pray to God he helps us. We are destroyed. ???? wish I had seen this article sooner.

They identified themselves as CenterPoint Energy & said I owed back payments to April & my electricity would be shut of in 45 minutes.

Automated message stating that our CenterPoint Energy account was past due and payment was needed or gas services would be disconnected. Contacted CenterPoint and was told that this was a scam and to not provide any information to the caller.

I received a robocall claiming to be from the utility company, Centerpoint Energy. The recording warned me that my electric service would be interrupted in 45-60 minutes. It said to avoid this, press 1 to speak to a live caller. I recognized it was a scam and immediately hung up the phone. Just wanted to get this out there!

Got a call to my cell phone and the caller ID said CenterPoint Energy so I answered. I was told by a female operator that a technician was on the way to my house to disconnect service, and she mentioned my actual home address without my providing it so it seemed legitimate. This was totally unexpected because I was pretty sure we did not have an outstanding balance so I was suspicious especially when she said she would transfer me and a man ("the manager") immediately picked up after a 4 second hold (that would never happen with Centerpoint). I was told a tech would disconnect service in 20 minutes and that I needed to make a payment of $498.77 over Zelle. Joe Jenkins ("the manager") walked me through the steps and told me to put the meter number-that he provided me-in place of the phone number...okay I can buy that. I wanted to confirm the meter number so I asked where I could find it on the meter and he said something about it being generic at which point I went from 75% to 99% sure it was a scam. I moved to the confirm payment step and saw it was going to "JUAN" who Joe explained was the tech who was coming to disconnect service. Joe sent me a confirmation email that my service was being disconnected with the Centerpoint logo and generally looked pretty legit besides the typos and the email address [email protected] which he explained was Centerpoint Energy=CPE...duh. Anyway, this was a scam that was pretty good, but too many things that just didn't make sense so I told Joe to go ahead and disconnect my service. Very unpleasant experience, but hopefully no harm no foul. On the other hand they do have my name, phone number, email address and home address so that isn't great.

My father received a call on April 6th from 281-857-6666. The gentleman name David I believe claimed to be with Centerpoint Energy and that my father was at risk of getting his gas cut off due to non-payment. We explained to the gentleman that we never received a bill therefore, it was on the company's end that this matter needed to be addressed. Back and forth conversation ensued between him and my father and finally with myself. He stated over and over that he had a dispatcher on hold and can only hold the dispatcher for 30min max (by this time, we had been on the phone for almost 30min). He stated in order to stop the dispatcher, we would need to pay via CashApp only and not online because the bill was overdue and the urgency of the payment could only be completed by CashApp. If we used the online option (which he never divulged more info about) we would still have the gas cut off because the payment would be not be displayed on his account until 48hrs later.

I asked various questions such as why would he still have his gas cut off if he paid online? Despite the 48hr wait, the payment would still be in the processing phase and thus displayed on the company's end. I also asked why CashApp was being offered when in-fact the Centerpoint's website did not reflect this as an option. At this point he was raising his voice, screaming about why I did not understand that my dad's gas was at risk of being shut off if we did not use the CashApp and the dispatcher would be arriving in soon (at this point we had been conversing for about an hour). He continued to interrupt my questioning and comments by yelling over me and threatening to send the dispatcher and he was "sorry" but the gas would be cut off.

I finally called customer service of Centerpoint Energy to complain about the gentleman - who was still on the phone but talking with my dad - and they revealed that it was a scam. My dad's gas had never been cut on since his account opened and the equipment was installed. I immediately told my dad who hung up the phone promptly. While he did not give him my dad's credit/debit card numbers, I do not know if my dad gave him the address and his full name since he answered the call initially.

Received a call from a person claiming that there was an order to disconnect electrical services at my address due to unpaid electrical bill and they asked an amount of $295.00 be paid so service would not be interrupted. The person spoke in Spanish and I did not agree to pay anything. I checked with Reliant Energy which is my energy carrier to find out details on this matter and I was told that this was a scam. This took place on 01/23/2020.

- Victoria, TX, USA

I received an automated message from 1-800-592-2000 (which is the actual CenterPoint Energy phone number) that states:

"Message from the disconnection department of Center Point Energy, the electricity company. To inform you that you will be experiencing a disconnection of service today within 30 minutes due to non payment on the account. Please contact billing head quarters as soon as possible to avoid service interruption at 1-800-609-9420."

I called 1-800-592-2000 to verify because we do not have anything with CenterPoint and they stated it was a scam. Which is why the scammers give a different call back number. I fear that several elderly will fall victim with the fear of having their electrical services cut off. I will save the message if it's needed. Thank you.

Received a recorded phone call saying that our electric service account was past due and to avoid service disruption to please call the toll free number 1-800-715-3327. When called you get the standard beginning of the Centerpoint answering system message about English or Spanish, then if it is an emergency to ...all the same but where if it was a real number for Centerpoint you would be able to just talk into the phone or select other. Here you can't. The only option is to press 3 which sends you to some guy or woman who answers and asks how can they help you. They ask for your account number. I told the guy that he was a crook and he hung up.. Just call the telephone number on your bill.

Claimed they were coming to turn electricity off at my my house. Claimed we hadn't paid in two months which is completely false and the reason I didn't think they were legit. I claimed they were scamming me and they hung up.

Claimed they were coming to turn electricity off at my business. Claimed we hadn't paid in two months which is completely false and the reason I didn't think they were legit. I claimed they were scamming me and they hung up.

a guy called from 713-207-2222 pretending to be a CenterPoint Energy technician telling me they're disconnecting our gas w/in 1 hour because we "didn't pay the gas bill". Told me to call 800-692-0338 "billing department" to find out why. I freaked out because this is a business account and we can't operate w/o gas! So, i called back per his instruction, this guy who claimed to be "Ryan in Billing department" said we didn't pay the bill on time and the only way to stop the disconnect will be to pay the "balance" in a food store kiosk, IN CASH! He gave me the address to this food store in a very shady neighborhood, and ask me to bring the cash payment to a kiosk inside this store, then call him back to "give me a code" to process the payment. After I hang up w/ "Ryan", I decided to call CenterPointer Energy's main line directly instead of the "Billing dep. #" they gave me, CenterPoint Energy told me this is a fraud & we owe zero balance. As I'm filing this fraud online, this "Ryan" guy called back from 800-342-5397 asking if I made it to the food store yet. I told him not to call me back because I'm calling the police on him, because there's no way a utility provider will take cash payment only! The part that why "Ryan" insisted "no checks, no credit cards because those take 24 hr to process" and "not enough time to stop the technician from disconnecting w/in 1 Hr." gave way to my suspicion that this is a SCAM!!!

- Huffman, TX, USA

Someone called and said I owed $490 for my electric bill and they were sending someone to my house to disconnect my power. They asked if I could go to the dollar store and pay the bill there. I do not have CenterPoint Energy as my electric provider. The caller spoke Spanish.
