A man offering to install an asphalt driveway misled and took advantage of my elderly parents.

My parents ended up paying thousands more for an asphalt driveway than they agreed to pay in an apparent scam that seems to have been repeated in multiple states.

A man showed up at their house while my 72-year-old mother was home alone and my 73-year-old father was in the hospital. He said he was in the area working on a parking lot and offered to lay down an asphalt driveway for them for $6.50/square foot. He said he was from Omaha. He talked to my father on the phone and convinced him to agree to this deal on the spot from his hospital bed. My father was led to believe that he was getting a great deal using materials left over from another project.

I became concerned about this spur-of-the-moment project and started trying to figure out who this guy was.

A Google search turned up some alarming news stories, including:

Bellvue asphalt scam leads to contractor's arrest

and

Man accused of running paving scam is at it again, Waltham Police say

https://www.cbsnews.com/boston/news/i-team-waltham-paving-scam-cornelius-stanley... />
Believing my parents were in the process of being scammed, I called the police. An officer went to my parents' house. I was at another location. The man confirmed that he is the same man from the Bellvue news article and said that issue had been resolved. The officer talked to me on the phone, saying that since my mom had signed the contract agreeing to pay $6.50/square foot for the asphalt driveway and the work was underway, there was nothing to be done about it.

The contract didn't include a total price estimate, just the $6.50/square foot quote my father had agreed to, and the man said he would do measurements and give a final price upon completion of the project. I asked if my parents could be billed rather than paying on the spot to ensure that everything was sorted out properly and was told that payment was due upon completion.

The police officer left, the work was completed, and my mother was given a bill for $7,800, which she paid. The invoice indicated that the work measured 1,368 square feet. I measured the driveway later and it is nowhere near that size. The asphalt covers an area that is about 37 feet by 12 feet. At $6.50/square foot, that works out to $2,886. While my father didn't have the exact measurements of his driveway when he talked to Cornelius Stanley from his hospital bed, what he was expecting to pay was nowhere near the amount of the final bill.

To whom it may concern

I am writing to you about someone who is scamming people by portraying himself as a home improvement or handyman. His profile was on Nextdoor, Facebook, Amgi which looked ok In my story, I am a senior on social security and needed some services to check up needed maintenance such as a lawn tractor and chainsaw. He got money up front to get the items needed for service. He stated he had to take the items to his shop to complete the service. As a result of this I am out over $3,250.00 worth of payments for service and items that never have been returned in working order. He kept making excuses on problems with parts and using his two year old daughter, covid and having a stroke for the delay. He uses his daughter in his postings and when he comes to get money from people. This is exploiting his daughter in these scams. He even was asking for vimeo charity donations on Nextdoor using his daughter. I even said I would get a friend to pick up my serviced items but he had no response. I sent him a certified letter saying I want my things back in working order or I will go to small claims court with no response. Then I filed a case for small claims court ********** to be heard on August 22, 2022. I started a criminal case *********** with the Greensboro Police(see Detective Lapp, District 4 for the $550 for non service). Magistrate Thomas found in my favor since he did not show up for court but he was served. I have full documentation if needed.

Since this has happened I have other people who will collaborate their similar experience on this person Justin Cox who scammed them for several thousand each. In my discussion with Greensboro Police, Justin has had several arrests for theft and jail time. Justin has been known in several counties of such scam issues.

Why I am asking is do you have a consumer reporter that might exposed this scam artist in our area. Many people have been affected. This scam artist needs to be exposed.

Please let me know if you do expose on scams.

Thanks

I was fooled into using this company to loan me money for a solar panel and retrofitting job that came out to be $80,000. i am a senior citizen and have cleaned homes all my life and now im stuck with my house on the line because the shady workers here did a contract that i didnt even want to sign but under duress and pressure signed it quickly so that they can stop treating me bad . This company paid off the contractor who has not even gotten the city inspector to pass the solar panels that they put up and probably dont even work and they went ahead and paid the contractor without veryfying that the cointract was fulfilled. theyre in on igt together and i want all my money back and i want everything done to my home undone at the cost of the contractor. los angeles 5938 s. wilton place 3232958436 lillian lopez. nothing to hide when being honest

Google earth is no way to quote a job. There are too many unknowns. You have to physically Measure the length, width and depth of your project area in feet. Multiply the length, width and depth together to get your number of cubic feet.

I had three asphalt companies came out to physically measure before quoting the job.

I called them all Monday they all said the same thing there is no way you could correctly determine the amount of material needed by using google earth.

As you can see the asphalt is not squared up (red arrows) and very sloppily done by the road. This needs to be corrected.

Elisha (the owner) agreed to paint my kitchen and stain my outside stairs, came to my house demanded immediate payment and never return to start painting. Elisha finally agreed to issue a refund then later stated she no longer had the money to refund to me. An attempt was made to settle this matter with Fairclaims.com provided by Homeadvisor. every time i reached out she either would not respond or gave some excuse as to why she cant pay me or complete the job I paid her $500 up front and never saw her again. She has also did this to numerous of people and is a scam-even in her google reviews indicates she does this to people

This company called indicating that they were following up with rebates from Canadian Safety Standard since 2018 but needed the serial numbers off the current equipment. So I said yes to allowing them into my home however once they arrived they wanted to sell me a furnace, air conditioning and tankless water heater. They are indicating that they are from ******* ***** ******* affiliated with the government rebate programs. This is false information because when you go in the website that they did not provide but just gave me a name to search it doesn’t really populate the government website. Upon further search I found the government website however they to not solicit people to sell them anything. I believe this to be the same company working under a new name in the area. These sales people are from the Quebec area and work the same way as they did the first time in contacting you to sell you rental equipment that you are locked into for 10 yrs with not maintenance done on the equipment. Huge scam with liens put on your property!

USA PASSPORT# ********* Vehicle for business Chevy F 350

White color

Please don't contact me.

I'm afraid of him

- San Diego, CA, USA

He pretended to be nice stating that there was a deal going on for the street I lived on and he knew my last name. I asked him to put me on the “Do not call list” then he hung up immediately.

I have been very careful about not saying yes "if you can hear me now" but this time he asked me if this was my residence and actually used my last name,,,,before I could think fast enough, and I say this because I have a rental business on the same line,,,I had answered yes,,,,then said no thank you,,,,probably too late,,,,I don't know what kind of trouble I have caused because I looked up the number and it was a scammers number,,,,so I guess I will be watching my bills and credit cards,,,,,this is such a violation and it really angers me that these losers get by with this,,,,,
